How to Get Gengar in Pokemon Legends Z-A

Found in Old House in Main Mission 20

Overworld Image Map Image

The only known location to find a wild Gengar in Pokemon Legends Z-A is in the Old Building during Main Mission 20. This is the only scripted appearance of Gengar, so players who fail to catch it here will need to evolve a Haunter via trade.

Evolution-Exclusive Pokemon

Aside from its special appearance in the Main Mission and as an Alpha, Gengar is typically an evolution-only Pokemon. Gengar does not appear in any Wild Zones as a regular encounter.

Haunter will evolve into Gengar when traded to another player.

How to Unlock Trading and Link Play

Trade Haunter with Another Player to Get Gengar

To receive your own Gengar, you can send your Haunter to another person, and then ask them to give it back to you after it has evolved.

Trading Board

Linking Cord is not Available in Legends Z-A

You cannot evolve a wild Haunter naturally into a Gengar, and there is no Linking Cord in Pokemon Legends Z-A that is used for trade evolutions.

If you want to get a Gengar fast, trading with other players is the surest and fastest way to do so.

Gengar Best Nature and Moveset for Story

Modest or Timid

Nature Stat Changes
Modest SpAtk, Attack
Timid Speed, Attack

Since Gengar is a Fast Special Attacker, it's best Nature is either Modest or Timid to boost its Special Attack or Speed further, while reducing its Attack stat.

Alternative Natures

Nature Stat Changes
Mild SpAtk, Defense
Rash Speed, SpDef

You can also give Gengar either Mild or Rash nature, if you will mainly use it for Story Content.

Keep in mind that giving Gengar any of the above two natures will increase the damage it receives, making it less ideal for Competitive Play and harder post-game content.

Use Mints to Change Natures

Mint Usage

If your Gengar has a different Nature than the ones we recommend above, you can use a Mint to change its Nature.
Mints Locations and How to Change Nature

Best Gengar Moveset for the Story

Shadow Ball Pokemon Ghost Type Icon 8
Hypnosis Pokemon Psychic Type Icon 10
Perish Song Pokemon Normal Type Icon 20
