The Pokemon Presents 2025 trailer revealed the starter Pokemon for Pokemon Legends Z-A: Tepig, Totodile, and Chikorita!

Pokemon Legends: Z-A takes place entirely within Lumiose City, a high-tech urban area undergoing redevelopment. The city features distinct locations ranging from shopping districts to parks and cafes where people and Pokemon coexist as part of Lumiose’s new vision for the future.
Unlike previous games where players journey across multiple towns, this adventure focuses on exploring a single city filled with diverse environments and urban life.

Wild Zones are areas located throughout Lumiose City and serve as habitats for wild Pokemon for them to coexist with people. You can enter these zones to battle and capture wild Pokemon.

The real-time catching mechanic from Legends: Arceus makes a full return, allowing players to aim and throw a Pokeball directly at a wild Pokemon to capture it.
You can also enter a battle to weaken it first if you are having a difficult time capturing it.

The trailer showcased both new and returning characters. The most notable return is AZ, originally from Pokemon X and Y, who now runs the hotel where the main protagonist is staying.
New characters are shown including Urbain, Taunie, Jett, and Vinnie. Urbain and Taunie are the main protagonist's ally and you get to meet either one of them depending on the main protagonist's appearance.
Jett is the CEO of Quasartico Inc., a company that manages Lumiose City's redevelopment. Vinnie serves as Jett's secretary.

Moves in Pokemon Legends Z-A now have attack ranges and areas of effect. This is a big change from previous Pokemon games' combat as it allows players to physically dodge enemy attacks in order for avoid damage.

Players can lead their partner Pokemon away from incoming enemy attacks to avoid getting hit. Timing and positioning play an important role to get a chance of attacking the enemy right away. Positioning is key!
Battle System: Will Battles Be Turn Based?

Mega Evolutions return in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, serving as one of the game’s signature mechanics as announced in Pokemon Day 2025 Trailer.
Having a Trainer Key Stone resonate with a held Mega Stone of a Pokemon can trigger the Mega Evolution, allowing for stronger attacks that could change the tide of battle in your favor!
New Mega Evolution Pokemon in Legends Z-A

Trainers compete in ranked matches known as Promotion Matches to climb through divisions and earn new privileges across the city.
The end of the trailer teased promotion matches. This ties to what we now know to be the Z-A Royale where players increase their rank to progress the game.
What Does the Promotion Match Mean?
