How to Unlock Trial of the Ancestors

Defeat Scourge of the Skies in Shrike Island

You will immediately unlock Trial of the Ancestors upon defeating Scourge of the Skies in Shrike Island during Act 4.

Speak to Matiki

Scourge of the Skies Overview

Save Matiki from Scourge of the Skies at the end of Shrike Island. Return to your ship and speak to Matiki.

Travel to Eye of Hinekora

Passageway in Eye of Hinekora
Upon talking to Matiki, sail to the newly unlocked Eye of Hinekora. Once you exit the ship, proceed further into the area until you find the Passageway entrance.

Peer Into the Well of Passing

Peer Into the Well of Passing
Inside the passageway, talk to Matiki. After some dialogue, interact with the Well of Passing. Your character's spirit will be separated from their body, and you must proceed to the area ahead.

Complete the Tests of Mettle

Test of Mettle
The path you are on will lead you to three Tests of Mettle: Kaom, Maata, and Rakiata. As you go deeper into the area, you will enter the tests no matter what. Once you enter the test areas, waves of enemies will spawn and you must survive to pass the test.

Go to Navali's Rest

Pay Your Respects in Navali
After the third test, you must now look for the entrance to the Halls of the Dead. You will also pass by Navali's Rest, which grants you +5% additional Maximum Mana.

Locate and Explore the Halls of the Dead

This Halls of the Dead has more tests that function similarly to the previous area. Though this area is a bit more vast, its paths still lead you to the tests.

Complete Tawhoa's, Tasalio's, and Ngamahu's Tests

Tattoo of Tawhoa
Upon completing the tests, you a Tattoo will be dropped. Pick up the Tattoo and interact with the nearby totem to claim their reward. Each test will give you a choice between two permanent buffs, so take the opportunity to balance your character out!

Defeat Yama the White

Yama the White Boss Fight
After the three tests, you will be led to Yama the White, the area's boss. After the fight, continue through the Halls of the Dead until you find the entrance to the Trial of the Ancestors area.

Enter the Portal to Meet the Mother

Trial of the Ancestors Entrance
Once you enter the Trial of the Ancestors, talk to Navali. This will conclude the quest.

Trial of the Ancestors Rewards

Reward Choices
Dexterity Tattoo of Tawhoa +5 Dexterity	or	Lightning Tattoo of Tawhoa +5% Lightning Resistance
Intelligence Tattoo of Tasalio +5 Intelligence	or	Cold Tattoo of Tasalio +5% Cold Resistance
Strength Tattoo of Ngamahu +5 Strength	or	Fire Tattoo of Ngamahu +5% Fire Resistance

As you go through the Halls of the Dead, finishing the tests of Tawhoa, Tasalio, and Ngamahu will each grant you an item that gives a choice between two buffs. The item you choose to imbue yourself with will be permanently added to your character.
