Characters aren't server bound, meaning that you can switch between different Gateways and continue with the same character you've been using.

Should You Change Gateways?

To Be With Friends on a Different Gateway

The only reason you should change gateways is when you want to play with friends that are on a different gateway. Forming a party and going through the world of Path of Exile 2 requires party members to be on the same server.

Changes When Teleporting to a Party Member on Another Gateway

If you're at a party while your party members are on a different server, teleporting to them or vice versa will change your current gateway or theirs, depending on who teleports to whom.

This may affect your latency if the server you went to has a higher ping, making it harder to play the game.

What Gateway Should You Choose?

Choose the Gateway with the Lowest Ping

It is recommended to just pick the Gateway that has the lowest ping for you. Doing so lets you avoid frustrating moments where those few seconds could have saved you during a boss fight!
