Increase Support Gem Slots in Path of Exile 2 (PoE 2) by using Jeweller's Orbs, Vaal Orbs, increasing Character Levels, or using Items with higher Item Level. Learn all the ways to increase Support Gem Slots and why you would want to here.

Use Jeweller's Orbs on Skill Gems

Each Skill Gem you get from different levels of Uncut Skill Gems will only contain 2 Support Gem slots. In order to increase this limit, you must use different tiers of Jeweller's Orb.
A Lesser Jeweller's Orb will set the Support Gem slots on an item to three, while a Greater and Perfect Jeweller's Orb will set the Support Gem slots to four and five respectively.
You cannot decrease the slots by using a lower-tier Jeweller's on a Skill Gem with more slots.
Right Click on a Jeweller's Orb and Apply it to a Skill Gem
In order to properly use a Jeweller's Orb, right-click on the item like any other currency item and left-click on the Skill Gem you want to use it on.
Guaranteed Lesser Jeweller Orb in the Campaign
Side Quests and Points of Interests in the campaign reward you with different currencies and upgrades. The Orok Camp in Act 3 drops a guaranteed Lesser Jeweler's Orb that you can use to gain a bit more power.

Use Vaal Orbs on Skill Gems

Corrupts the item, making it unmodifiable with Jeweller's Orbs and Gemcutter's Prisms and one of the following effect:
・ No other changes
・ Adds or subtracts one Skill Gem Slot ・ Increases or decreases Quality ・ Permanently increases the Skill Gem's level by one |
Another method to increase a Skill Gem's Support Gem Slot is corrupting it with a Vaal Orb. Note that while this may result in increasing the Support Gem slots by one, it will often result in other, possibly undesirable, results.
This is best used when attempting to get six Support Gems slots from a 5-slot Skill Gem when Perfect Jeweller's Orbs are too expensive relative to Greater Jeweller's Orbs.

Increase Character Level for Ascendancy Skills

Skills granted by Ascenancy Passive Nodes cannot be used with crafting currencies to increase their Support Gem slots. However, the number of slots for these Ascendancy Skills increases based on your Character's Level.
You'll get the maximum amount of Support Gem Slots for Ascendancy Skills by reaching level 90.
How to Get 3rd and 4th Ascendancy Points
Use a Higher Item Level Item for Skills Granted by Items

Skills granted by items such as Wands, Staves, and other Unique items have Skill Gem Slots relative to the item's Item Level. An item dropped by a higher-level monster or from higher-level content will drop items with Item Levels equal to that monster or content's level.
Unfortunately, there are no ways to upgrade a low Item Level item to a higher-level one for more Skill Gem Slots. The best you can do in this situation is to acquire a similar item with a higher Item Level.
Why Increase Support Gem Slots?
To Increase Build Strength
The more Support Gem Slots a skill has, the more potential it has to synergize and make your build stronger. As an additional tip It would be best to only use a Jeweller's Orb if you are sure that the extra Support Gem you will slot in is substantial!
