The best ascendancy skills for the Acolyte of Chayula are the Chayula's Gift and Waking Dream due to their usefulness for most builds. Chayula's Gift is extremely helpful to survive endgame encounters with enemies that use Chaos, it also makes it easier to cap Chaos Resistance which is hard to obtian.

Waking Dream allows players to recover life and mana, while also being able to obtain damage buffs from the flames of Chayula. This is extremely helpful for sustaining life, mana, and damage in prolonged fights and mob encounters.

Acolytes can also use Darkness in exchange for their Spirit resource. Gaining darkness essentially removes the ability to use Persistent Skills, in exchange Acolytes obtain increased Defense and Chaos Damage.

You got one thing wrong. Even though "Consuming Questions" says that your energy shield doesn't recharge, and your mana leech will recharge energy shield, what really happens is that your energy shield doesn't just recharge any more. Mana leech doesn't infact recharge the energy shield.
