Essence of Enhancement Icon Essence of Enhancement Upgrades a Normal item to Magic with one Defence modifier.
Essence of Flames Icon Essence of Flames Upgrades a Normal item to Magic with one Fire modifier

Essence of Horror Icon Essence of Horror Upgrades a Normal item to Magic or a Magic item to a Rare item with one guaranteed property. Can only be used on Gloves or Boots.

Essences are obtained by defeating enemies trapped in Essences. They appear randomly throughout exploration and are commonly found in Atlas Maps.

Essences can also be obtained by visiting the Currency Exchange NPC in every Act. Currency Exchange becomes available in Cruel Difficulty which is unlocked after completing Act 3 on Normal difficulty.

What Are Essences?

Currency Items With Defined Modifier Pools

Essences are currency items that allow the player to control what modifiers they upgrade their Normal or Magic items with by ensuring that the modifier pulls from a set pool determined by the Essence.

For example, Essences makes the early crafting process more reliable if you are looking for specific modifiers, such as the essential Movement Speed modifier for boots.
