Runes are dropped randomly by defeated enemies. Stronger enemies like rare mobs have a higher chance of dropping Runes.

Runes can also be obtained by visiting the Currency Exchange NPC in every Act. Currency Exchange becomes available in Cruel Difficulty which is unlocked after completing Act 3 on Normal difficulty.

Runes are inserted into either Weapon or Armor with empty sockets to give them substantial buffs to their offense or survivability.
All runes have their dedicated effects that change whether they are inserted into a Martial Weapon or Armour piece.
Although Runes cannot be pulled out once equipped, they can be replaced with another, giving players more freedom when building their characters. Note that replacing your socketed Runes will cause the Rune to be destroyed.
