Hybrid Flowers Guide - Cross Pollination and How to Cross Breed Flowers | ACNH - Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch)

Gardening.jpg

This is a guide to cross pollination or flower breeding in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH) for Nintendo Switch. In addition to an explanation of cross pollination or flower breeding, this guide will explain everything there is to know about how to breed hybrid flowers. Read on to learn more!

How to Make Hybrid Flowers

3 Ways of Cross Pollination

1 Cross Pollination with 2 flowers from seeds (Recommended)
2 Cross Pollination with a flower from seeds and a flower originally on your island
3 Cross Pollination between 2 Hybrid Flowers

Flowers originally on the island will produce special hybrid flowers

Cross pollination.jpg
For the most part, hybrid flowers will be produced as shown below, but when using flowers that were already on your island, it will create a random colored flower.

For example, cross pollinating a red rose and a white rose will create a pink or red hybrid flower, but when cross pollinating using two flowers of these colors that were native to your island, it is possible to create yellow roses, etc.

Adjacant and Diagonal Flowers Will Cross-Breed

3x3 Grid.png

Hybrid flowers can be made in a 3x3 space grid

Cross pollination or crossbreeding only works within a fixed space, within a 3x3 space grid. Cross-pollination happens when flowers of the same type are adjacant, even if they are diagonal, like in the image above.

When certain conditions are met, cross polllination will result in rare hybrid flowers. See the chart below for more information on hybrid flower colors.

Do Flowers Bloom Easy If You Use a Watering Can?

Watering Can

Watering flowers with the watering can will cause flowers to sparkle. On the next day, buds can grow into flowers, and nearby flowers can bloom, so it seems that using a Watering Can can make cross pollination much easier.

Note: This information is still unconfirmed, so it will be updated in the near future.

There are Cross-Breeds That Require Specific Tools

You need a Gold Watering Can to make Golden Roses

There is a specific type of flower called a Golden Rose, which is bred in a different way than how you would usually cross-breed flowers. This also requires the Golden Watering Can. To learn more about breeding Golden Roses, please see our guide.

Hybrid flowers can contain recessive genes in their code (like irl flowers) that can result in some random flower colors. Seeds from Leif or the shop will always have two genes of the same color (like a red rose bag will have Rr gene.) This twitter post has a in-depth explanation that might help! :) https://twitter.com/GeneticJen/status/1259490563147075584

I somehow have gotten Pink Lillies from Red Lillies standing on their own. The Pink Lillies are in contact with Pink Windflowers though. Is it possible that cross breeding is possible with different types of flowers?

Hi Lexi - They are yours :). Just need your code.

    • You are welcome to the ZEN RESORT - PONTE. And it’s the SAKURA season because I started the game late and have missed the beautiful cherry blossom. Now is the perfect time to travel back in a dream. So glad for Luna because I can share this with you all. Feedbacks are welcome 🙏🏻 DA-2582-1713-0807
