The Winter Update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released on November 19, 2020 (Thursday) at 8:00 PM EDT. However, the new events won't be playable ahead of time, so there is not a lot to do until November 26 where Turkey Day is on!

As of version 1.6.0, new events are time locked, meaning you can't time travel to access the events before the specified event date. Once officially released, you can time travel to them at any time, even after the event has ended.

Six new hairstyle options will be available in this update. They can be purchased from the Nook Stop in Resident Services.
Nine new reactions will be available in this update. They can be purchased from the Nook Stop in Resident Services.
Talk to Tom Nook after reaching maximum amount of house upgrades and you'll be able to increase your storage from 1600 slots to 2400 slots.
You are now able to visit random islands while dreaming. This will open up new inspirations for your island, and surprises for you to seek!
This new feature will allow you to transfer your Island and Resident data to another Nintendo Switch. A new app, Island Transfer Tool, will be available on the Nintendo eShop to facilitate the transfer.
How to Delete and Transfer Save Data
This new feature allows you to browse your catalog via the NookLink app. You can now check all your items without going to the Nook Stop!

A couple of new DIY items have been added to some of the different series already available in the game, like the Summer-Shell Rug for the Shell Series and the Festive Rug for the Festive Series. We'll continue to update if we confirm more!
Toy Day gifts will be available at Nook's Cranny from December 1 to December 25. They can be given as gifts to your villagers on Toy Day or you can purchase one for your own house!

We were able to confirm the two seasonal items above having been added with the Winter Update. The period you can order then in is from December 1 to December 31, so make sure you get them while you can!
Note: We found the items by going back to June between 6/21 to 7/6, where the Aurora Wall was available for Southern Hemisphere and the Sunflower Rug was available in the Northern Hemisphere. This might not be intentional and might get fixed!

With the Animal Crossing: New Horizons game selected on the Home screen, press the + button on your Switch to view the game data.
Select Software Update from the left tab.
You can update your game Via the Internet or you can Match Version with Local Users.

With the Animal Crossing: New Horizons game selected on the Home screen, press the + button on your Switch to view the game data.
Select Software Information from the left tab. You can go to the Nintendo eShop to see if your game is up-to-date.
