Build DIY items by collecting recipes and using a workbench in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH). Learn how to build DIY items here, including where to get materials and how to unlock golden tools.
List of Contents

To build DIY items, you first need to get the recipe for that item. Recipes can be obtained in many ways. You can get them from your villagers, through message bottles, at Nook's Cranny, using Nook Miles, from campsite visitors, and through story progression.

Once you've got the recipe, you're going to need the ingredients. You can check the materials needed for by looking at the item recipe from a workbench, or through the DIY Recipes app on your NookPhone.
As of version 3.0, you can also pull materials from your storage! No need to worry about pocket space when building DIY items. You can put all of your materials in storage, and they'll automatically be used when you build items.
How to Store Items and Get More Storage Space

Once you have all the materials you need, you can go ahead and start building the DIY item. If you don’t have a workbench yet, you can craft one or use the one in Resident Services. Additionally, you can also use a neighbor's workbench, but only if they have it displayed!
Select the DIY you want to build, and if you're playing on version 3.0, you'll also have the option to bulk craft up to ten of the same items. Simply press Y, choose how many you want to craft, and you're done! Just make sure you have enough space in your inventory.
Bulk Crafting Guide: How to Craft Multiple Recipes

As an optional step, you can also customize some DIY items to personalize them further. Customization unlocks early in the game, specifically when you're preparing homes for your first five villagers. Just make sure you have enough DIY Customization Kits to get started.

Some DIY Recipes are part of a collection and can be bought for Bells and Nook Miles. You can see which DIY recipes you get by buying each of them on their respective guides!

Campsite visitors invited via amiibo will always give you a DIY recipe. Unless you already know how to make their requested item, you'll receive the recipe as part of their request.

You’ll also find at least one message bottle on your beach each day. Open it, and it should contain a DIY recipe!

Some of your residents will also be crafting or cooking a certain recipe each day. Check their houses and ask what they're making, and they should give you the recipe for it!

Seasonal events can also give you recipes. Be sure to participate in these to get limited-time recipes from them. Some materials may also be one-time only, so while they're around, be sure to farm those too.

Some DIY recipes are also tied to the story. Be sure to continue story progression, whether it's from Happy Home Paradise or the main story, as you'll get recipes from these. For example, you'll get a bunch of recipes as you prepare the homes of your third to fifth villagers!

Seasonal recipes are limited as well. These aren't explicitly tied to events, since you can simply naturally get them while exploring. Isabelle will, however, give you some recipes each day during the daily announcement.

Materials are key to crafting DIY items. You can get them by gathering them from the ground or by using tools, such as axes for wood and stone, and shovels for clams.
Some materials are seasonal too, such as cherry-blossom petals, summer shells, mushrooms, and snowflakes. These only appear during certain seasons, so be sure to gather them as well if you want to build seasonal DIYs!
List of DIY Materials

DIY (Do It Yourself) is the act of building or putting something together to create an item, rather than buying it from a store.
This is the first game in the Animal Crossing series to have this feature, and this will surely step up your island beautification game!

Introduced in the 3.0 update, crafting DIY items now has another purpose. Kapp'n may request certain items as a way to promote your island's goods. When you submit these items, you earn tickets that can be used to buy items from the hotel , which was also introduced in the same update!
You can find the DIY Donation Box next to Kapp'n's Boat Tours. Interact with the box to see which items are currently being requested.
