Chopping Trees 13 (1).jpg

This is a guide to chop trees to get wood, chop them down, and pull them up in the game Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH). Learn how to use an Axe to get wood, hardwood and softwood.

How to Chop Wood from Trees

Craft a Flimsy Axe

Flimsy Axe
In order to start getting items like wood, hardwood, and softwood, you'll need to start off with a Flimsy Axe.

To make the Flimsy Axe, you'll need to find a Stone and some Tree Branches scattered around. Then, go to the DIY Workbench in Resident Services, and you'll be able to craft a Flimsy Axe right away!

Chop Trees to Get Wood

Once you've got a Flimsy Axe, equip if from your inventory, and you'll be able to hit trees with the A button to chop Wood, Softwood and Hardwood from it.

How to Chop Down Trees

Craft an Axe

The Flimsy Axe and Stone Axe are not able to chop down trees. In some way, this makes them useful, as a real Axe will always cut down a tree on the third strike, so you're better off using a Flimsy or Stone Axe when you don't want to cut down a tree.

Repay the initial loan

Once you've repaid the initial loan of 5,000 Miles to Tom Nook, you'll be able to purchase the Pretty Good Tools Recipes for 3,000 Miles from Nook Stop on the “Redeem Your Miles” screen. This will give you access to a variety of non-Flimsy tools, including the Axe.

How to Get the Axe

Chop Down the Tree

Equip the Axe, get close to the tree and let 'er rip! After three strikes, the tree will come crashing down.

Pull Up the Stump (Optional)

After cutting down a tree, a stump will remain in its place. If you want to get rid of the stump to plant something else in its place, you can pull it up with any kind of Shovel, including the Flimsy Shovel.

How to Pull Up a Tree

A Shovel is Required

To pull up a Tree, the first thing you'll need is a Shovel. Any Shovel, including the Flimsy Shovel, will work fine. You can craft a Shovel at a DIY Workbench, after receiving it from Blathers.

How to Get the Flimsy Shovel

Eat a Fruit to Gain Stamina

Stumps can be pulled up at any time, but to pull up a whole tree, you'll need a little power boost. By eating a fruit, you can gain a point of stamina, up to a maximum of 10 points. For each point of stamina, you'll be able to lift one full tree out by its roots using a Shovel.

The Stamina meter will be visible in the top right of the screen after eating a Fruit.

Before: 1 Point of Stamina

After: 0 Points of Stamina

Pros of Chopping Down and Pulling Up Trees

Some bugs can only be obtained from stumps

There are some bugs which will only appear on stumps. It's a good idea to leave a few stumps around to try to hunt for these rare bugs.

Bug Encyclopedia

Sit on the stump

After you've cut down a tree, you can use the stump as a chair. If you cut down a tree in a spot with a view, you can take a nice picture with your Villager!

Replant a pulled-up tree

If you've pulled up a full tree without cutting it down, you'll be able to replant it in a new spot. After you've pulled up a tree, it will appear as an item in your bag, and you'll be able to plant it again at any time and place with it already fully grown, without needing to start again from a sapling.

This is a good tactic if you're looking for softwood or need more wood for that. But still, it should eat into a lot of time, right?
