Mantises spawn on flowers, so make sure to grow some flowerbeds on your island to get them!
If all else fails, or if you don't want to risk ruining your flowerbeds catching bugs, you can head to a Mysterious Island and use your net to catch some mantises.

You never know when the bug you are searching for might just pop out in front of you on its own, so always keep your net equipped and at the ready!
Go near some flowerbeds and see if you can spot a mantis! They should be lurking on the petals, so be sure to approach them slowly as they might fly away!
Once you've spotted one, you can just walk up to the mantis and press A to catch them!
