Handheld Lantern is a Seasonal Item that can be bought through Nook Shopping whenever it's available!
The Handheld Lantern was added in the July 2021 Update (Version 1.11.0) in celebration of the Lantern Festival. Here is the in-game description of the seasonal event:
“Celebrated throughout Europe, this traditional event features a night of children carrying lanterns and singing songs to usher in the start of winter.”
The Handheld Lantern is a tool that you can hold. Although it looks like it can't do much, it swings around when you run around with it in your hand!
You can also lay it down as furniture to decorate your island!
