Items provide extra buffs during a stage run that can be greatly beneficial when picked up. These have varying tiers that determine how big of an impact they can have in a playthrough. While not to the extent of weapon upgrades, they can still assist players in clearing certain stages.

Solaris Soldier Upgrade Selection

After each enemy wave, be sure to wisely spend your Enhancement Modules on a random selection of items, character, or weapon upgrades.

While weapon upgrades tend to be preferred for the added benefit of leveling them up and increasing their forms upon reaching certain levels, gold and purple items still are worth getting when you come across them and can be better than lower-tier weapon or character upgrades.
