Is Avidius Playable?
Not a Playable Character
Avidius is not a playable character as of current writing and Kuro Games has not posted any official information on Avidius being playable. Notably, he shares a resemblance to Cristoforo and both are highly-requested characters by the community to be playable in the future.

Who is Avidius?
One of the Senate's Favored Gladiators
Avidius first appears in Chapter 2, Act 8 - Part 1 of the Main Story Quest, as the Septimontian Senate's representative for The Hunt, which is Ephor Augusta's plan to neutralize the Dark Tide's source by venturing to Sanguis Plateaus.
He is constantly seen throughout this journey, seemingly having his own agenda for joining this hunt whilst keeping an air of courtesy towards Augusta and her priestess, Iuno. Being the cherished gladiator of the senate, he seemingly challenges Augusta's decisions.
Cristoforo's Puppet in His Story
Later on in the same act, it is revealed that Avidius' feats from the past were artificially manufactured by Cristoforo, and that he is a puppet of the playwright's own creation to satisfy his amusement with heroes.
Upon knowing of this revelation, he breaks down emotionally after the hunt concludes and is last seen musing to himself about his predicament as of Chapter 2, Act 8 - Part 2 at the Tetragon Temple.
Challenges His Written Fate
Avidius returns during Act 10 of Chapter 2, having snapped out of his wallowing to resist his creator to fight against the Dark Tide. He accompanies Rover as they look for Galbrena, who appears in the same Act.
Chapter 2: Even When Divinity Remains Silent Walkthrough
Resists Cristoforo Until the End
Further into Act 10, it is revealed that Cristoforo's true intention for Avidius was to have him become a conduit of the Dark Tide, spreading it even more.
While this does come to pass, as Avidius turns into the Mad King Caligula, he remembers how he fought for his Humanity and uses his last moments to give Rover an opportunity to strike him down.
