Board the Gondola at the Docks

Speak to Planck the octopus merchant to begin sailing through the waters of Riccioli Islands! This will serve as your base of operations where you can Set Sail, check the Dock Shop to sell caught fish and buy materials, upgrade your Fishing Ability, view your Cargo, take on Fishing Requests, and track your Fame.

More Docks Unlock While Progressing Event Quests

Progressing the event's quests will unlock other Docks across Riccioli Islands which you can access the event interface from, Fast Travel to, and board or dock "Rachel" the Gondola at any time.

Each Dock will also feature a different Dock Shop, with more items for sale, so make sure to check them out if you have already bought out the resources from a previous Dock!

Set Sail and Look For Fishing Spots

Once you've made all of your necessary preparations, hit the Set Sail button to ride through the open sea. If you already have a Fishing Request picked up, a marker will immediately appear pointing toward the fishing location for the required fish.

Otherwise, you may approach any bubbles that form on the ocean's surface and catch fish from there, once you've determined the fish you can catch from it.

Make Preparations Before Sailing

There will be certain types of fish that only spawn during Day or Night, so be sure to change the time accordingly. You may also switch Rachel's Awning bought from different Dock Shops to enhance her abilities.

Finally, select the Automatically restore durability before sailing option as well to restore all of Rachel's hearts before setting sail!

Track Fish From the Index

If you would like to try your hand at catching any fish, you can track the location of both caught and uncaught fish through the Index.

Simply select the book icon from the Docks at the bottom right side of the screen, or select the book icon on the right side of your screen while sailing to open the Index and track your desired catch.

Avoid Hazards at Sea

While you're fishing, be sure to avoid dangerous obstacles such as Tornadoes, Ghost Medusas and Bampuffs. Your Gondola will lose a heart whenever she bumps into one, indicated at the bar below. Once she runs out of hearts, you will automatically return to the nearst dock and lose all of your caught fish!

Reel in All Sorts of Fish

Casting a line over a fishing spot will automatically pull up the fishing minigame, where the goal is to raise your Fishing Progress to 100% per fish, indicated by the fish icons on the left side of the wheel.

While the minigame has variants depending on the fishing spot, always aim to hit the orange bars for a steady increase, and hit the yellow bars to speed up Fishing Progress. Be careful not to get too hasty though, as hitting the empty space results in a deduction of progress points.

Manage Your Cargo Capacity

One of the highlights of this event is arranging differently-shaped fish onto your cargo board to make sure they fit! You can only take what you can fit inside the cargo container, so be sure to keep the most valuable ones you catch, and sadly let go of less valuable fish you can't carry!

How to Arrange Cargo while Fishing

Upgrade the Gondola to Increase Cargo Capacity

You can increase your gondola's cargo at any time by upgrading it through the Fishing Abilities tab, on the Fishing Ability Skill Tree. This will allow you to fit fish with increasingly large and difficult shapes into your cargo, and leave space for smaller fish to fill the gaps.

Get Riccioli Fishery Coins

Riccioli Fishery Coins is the main currency used to buy upgrade materials and other useful items used while sailing. To obtain them, you could either sell your fish to Planck at the Dock Shop or complete any available Fishing Requests.

How to Farm Riccioli Fishery Coins

Sell Your Fish

You can easily get Riccioli Fishery Coins by selling fishes in your cargo to Planck, the Octopus, by selecting the Dock Shop button at the bottom of the events interface.

You may choose to sell the fish individually, or select the Sell All button to bulk sell. Just make sure there are no fish required by Fishing Requests in your cargo before you do this.

Complete Fishing Requests

Fishing Requests will appear from time to time at the top right corner of the events interface split between Priority Requests which are needed to progress a quest, and Common Requests which you can do at any time.

These requests will task you with catching a specific fish, then hand them over in exchange for a fixed amount of Fame, Riccioli Fishery Coins, and Upgrade Materials.

Upgrade Your Fishing Abilities

Once you have enough Riccioli Fishery Coins and the proper upgrade materials, you can go to the Fishing Abilities tab and spend them on Gondola or Character Upgrades!

Best Fishing Ability to Unlock First

Gondola Upgrades

You can upgrade your Gondola by spending Riccioli Fishery Coins and Upgrade Materials at the Fishing Ability tab! These upgrades include increased cargo slots, better sailing speed, and unique fishing abilities which you may need to improve your fishing excursions!

Character Upgrades

The Rover and Phoebe also have their own unique Fishing Abilities that can help you further your fishing perks like being able to sell fish for a higher value, so be sure to unlock them!

The upgrade materials needed for these abilities can be bought at the Dock Shop, or can be gained by progressing the event quests.

Raise your Fame

While raising Fame does not directly impact your fishing experience, raising it to a specific level does unlock reward tiers at the limited-time rewards shop where you can obtain items such as Astrites, Phantom: Lorelei, and some Resonator and Echo upgrade materials!

You can raise the most Fame by progressing event quests and completing Fishing Requests, while catching fish for the first time will also give you an ample amount of Fame.

Old Man and the Whale also features quests that serve as the event's story, as well as provide you with some character upgrade materials and other rewards for completing them. Doing these quests will also unlock parts of the Riccioli Islands so be sure to do them!

Permanent Event After Version 2.1

You can still play and get the permanent rewards of the Old Man and the Whale event even after Version 2.1 is over. However, you will miss the limited-time rewards such as the free weapon, Ocean's Gift, Phantom: Lorelei, and some Astrites once they disappear after March 26, 2025!
