First and foremost, you'd want to select a Main DPS as it will be the main driver for your team. The end goal for Wuthering Waves is to defeat enemies, with the Main DPS taking on that role.

When choosing a Main DPS, you'd want to consider their attribute. There are six attributes in Wuthering Waves: Fusion, Glacio, Aero, Electro, Havoc, and Spectro.
Enemies in Wuthering Waves may have resistances to specific Attribute types, so choosing the correct attribute will increase your team's overall performance.

On top of having increased Attribute RES, some enemies are straight up immune to elemental effects. These are mostly Prisms, so take note of your team comps when fighting them.

Outside of the attributes, characters will be scaling off of specific DMG stats in battle. These are specified in their kit descriptions and will be important when choosing Sub-DPSs or Supports.
Since a Main DPS will deal damage scaling off of that stat, it is only logical to consider buffing that stat when building a viable team.

Next in line would be the Sub-DPS which will mostly depend on who your Main DPS is. The main role of the Sub-DPS is to provide direct buffs to the Main DPS, as they will mostly take the field before the Main DPS.

A Sub-DPS should be chosen to directly help out the Main DPS, either by providing buffs or being a secondary damage source. Their Outro Skill Buffs should match the Damage Scaling and/or Attribute of the Main DPS to maximize the buffs that the Main DPS gets.
The example above is the buff provided by Ciaccona, and is aimed at buffing Aero Erosion DMG characters like Cartethyia.

Outside of providing direct buffs, a Sub-DPS can also provide additional damage to the entire team, whether from off-field attacks or just increasing the overall team DPS by dealing damage themselves. We could say that the perfect Sub-DPS not only provides buff, but also deal non-negligible damage.

Supports are by far the most important character when building a team, as their main mandate is to provide utility and support to the entire team. This support may extend to providing offensive & defensive buffs, healing, interrupt resistance, or more, depending on their kits.

The perfect way to describe a support is their capability to heal. As much as it is possible to do no-hit runs in WuWa, the normal player will always get hit. This makes healer-supports one of the most important roles in the game, as they will be capable of topping up the team's vitality to stay longer in fights.

In rotations, Supports will usually come before the Sub-DPS, so their Outro Skill Buffs won't reach the Main DPS directly. With this in mind, Supports will usually provide team-wide buffs that extend to the whole team regardless of who the next Resonator is.
The example above is for Shorekeeper, one of the Supports in the game that provides all party members a 15% DMG Amplification.

Outro Skills are special skills in a character's kit that activate when switching to another character at full Concerto Gauge. These Outro Skills can either provide some sort of utility for Sub-DPS and Supports and/or deal additional damage for Main DPS's.
Team Synergy will usually revolve around characters' Outro Skills and how the buffs they provide tie in with one another.

To activate the Outro Skill, you must be able to fill your Concerty Gauge. A full concerto gauge activates the exiting character's Outro Skill and the incoming character's Intro Skill to deal damage or provide buffs.
Knowing how fast a character can generate Concerto Energy is one of the core fundamentals of team building, as the character's Concerto Regen usually dictates their on-field time. Sanhua, for example, has the fastest concerno Energy Regen in the game and therefore the shortest on-field time at around 8-9 seconds.
Resonators will have varying on-field times, usually dictated by their kits and how fast they generate Concerto Energy.
It is important to know how long a character's rotation is because it can affect which characters you choose to pair with each other. Buffs do not last forever after all, so maximizing rotations while under the effect of such buffs must be something you should consider.

On top of all that, a Resonator's Sonata Effect of choice plays a crucial role in building a team. Even though a character can be in multiple teams, the Sonata Effect they wear can change.
Some Sonata Effects are DPS-centric while others are Support-centric. Knowing which one to wear is one of the core fundamentals in making an effective team in Wuthering Waves.
For example, Rover (Aero) is a character that can provide team-wide heals and increase the stack of Aero Erosion in a team.
This makes them a perfect support for the HP-scaling Cartethyia, but not while using the healer-specific Rejuvenating Glow sonata effect because that Sonata Effect increases the Attack stat of the entire team.
For other teams that scale off of Attack, Rover (Aero) is a viable healer that can trigger the effects of Rejuvenating Glow.
