The only way to learn the DIY Recipe for the Golden Axe is to break around 100 Axes. Eventually, after your Axe breaks enough times, your character will have a flash of enlightenment and learn the DIY Recipe for the Golden Axe.
As any Axe is fine to break, it's best to use Flimsy Axes as much as possible, as these will break quickly and allow you to rack up the required number of broken Axes in no time.
Needed Materials | Amount |

Gold Nugget | 1 |
Axe | 1 |
Don't forget that a rare Gold Nugget is required to make a Golden Axe. Make sure you know how to get your hands on one of these first before trying to craft the Golden Axe.
Whenever you use an Axe, you'll bounce back from the hit, which will cause you to take longer for every swing. Digging holes behind your character to prevent them from bouncing back will ensure they can continue swinging the Axe as fast as possible.
As a Flimsy Axe costs 800 Bells to craft, you'll be investing somewhere in the area of 80,000 Bells to make 100 of them. Otherwise, if you've already stashed a huge number of Tree Branches and Stones, you can use these to craft Flimsy Axes instead.
Translation: Oh no! The Golden Axe broke! Thanks for your service, soldier!
Unlike previous games in the series, it's been confirmed that the Golden Axe can break. Based on our tests, the Golden Axe breaks after only around 100 swings so currently, it doesn't appear to be significantly worth the effort to upgrade.
If you want to visit your friend's island and cut down their trees in style, consider crafting a Golden Axe!

It also doesn't leave cute patterns on tree stumps. It's the worst of the gold tools but is the easiest to get.
