You can purchase a trash can if it is available in Nook's Cranny. Their product lineup changes each day so be sure to check frequently!
How to Unlock Nook's Cranny and Upgrade It
You can ask a friend if they have it being sold at the shop on their island, or if they have it in their catalog. Once you have the item in your pockets, it will be registered in your item catalog, which you can now purchase through Nook Shopping!
There are trash cans that can be crafted using DIY recipes, like the Wooden Waste Bin. Recipes can be obtained from balloons and message bottles, so be sure to get them when you see them!

When a trash can is placed on the ground, you can use it by pressing the A button in front of it.
Your pockets will open up and you can select multiple items you want to throw out.
When you are sure with the selected items, press the + button to confirm.
Check your selected items before you confirm! Once you throw items away, you cannot get them back anymore.
Similar to wardrobes, mirrors, and vanities, trash cans can be used by the player by pressing A in front of them. You can place trash cans inside your home, or outside on the island.
Unlike in previous Animal Crossing games, trash cans do not negatively affect your island rating.
You can use trash cans to dispose of items that cannot be sold or are worth little Bells, such as lost items, and garbage items (although we recommend using these for crafting instead). You can also throw away fake works of art you get from Redd, if they aren't worth displaying!
