Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Chief Bloodfiend Location and Weakness

This is a guide for Chief Bloodfiend in the Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree. Learn about Chief Bloodfiend's location, weakness, and the best build against Chief Bloodfiend.

Chief Bloodfiend Location

Found Inside Rivermouth Cave

World View Map Location

The Chief Bloodfiend is found at the end of Rivermouth Cave, in a cavern right after a large space filled with Bloodfiends standing in ceremony in front of a Bloodfiend Hexer. Sneak or fight past them to reach the fog wall.

Chief Bloodfiend Weakness

Weak to Frostbite and Poison

The Chief Bloodfiend has low resistances against Frostbite and Poison, meaning you can easily proc these to debuff him early into the fight.

Affix your weapons with Cold or Poison affinities using the Glintstone Whetblade or Black Whetblade. Or, equip weapons with inherent Frostbite or Poison buildup like the Zamor Curved Sword and the Venomous Fang.

For ranged builds, INT players can try to distance themselves and build up Frostbite with Glintstone Icecrag spam and Ranni's Dark Moon.

Weak to Slash-Type Weapons

The Chief Bloodfiend is weakest to Slash-type damage, based on our pure physical damage tests. Curved Greatswords, Katanas, and Backhand Blades are all great classes of Slash-type weapons to pick an armament from.

Best Build Against Chief Bloodfiend

Slashing Weapons Are Recommended

Elden Ring - Backhand Blade IconBackhand Blades BloodhoundBloodhound's Fang

The Chief Bloodfiend is vulnerable to slashing type weapons so we highly recommend that can deal this damage type against Chief Bloodfiend. A few of our recommendation include the Backhand Blade and the Bloodhound's Fang but any slashing type weapons you prefer will be effective against the boss.

Weapons That Inflict Frostbite, Poison, and Scarlet Rot are Great Options

Dark Moon GreatswordDark Moon Greatsword Antspur Rapier.pngAntspur Rapier Elden Ring - Poisoned Hand IconPoisoned Hand

Aside from Slashing Type damage, Chief Bloodfiend is also vulnerable to Frostbite, Poison, and Scarlet Rot. Use weapons that can inflict these status ailments such as the Dark Moon Greatsword, Antspur Rapier, or the Poisoned Hand to gain advantage against Chief Bloodfiend!

If you're using a weapon that can be infused with effects, consider using greases such as the Freezing Grease or Poison Grease to add the status ailments to your weapon!

Equip the Kindred of Rot's Exultation for Poison and Scarlet Rot Setups

Kindred of RotKindred of Rot's Exultation

The Kindred of Rot's Exultation talisman boosts your attack damage after inflicting either Scarlet Rot or Poison and will be a decent damage boost to your setup if you opt for these status ailments.

Fire Attacks Can Remove Frostbite

( Fire Affinity Fire )

Frostbite can inflict a huge chunk of damage while increasing the damage it takes from your attacks during the debuff duration. However, if you prefer to keep on re-applying Frostbite to Chief Bloodfiend, you can hit the boss with a fire attack to dispel the current Frostbite effect, allowing you to reapply the debuff.

Use Spells that Inflict Poison, Scarlet Rot, and Frostbite

Freezing Mist IconFreezing Mist BorealisBorealis's Mist
Rotten Breath IconRotten Breath EkzykesEkzykes's Decay
Scarlet Aeonia IconScarlet Aeonia Poison Mist IconPoison Mist

Spells that can inflict Scarlet Rot and Frostbite works well against Chief Bloodfiend due to its innate weakness to these status ailments. Few of our recommendation includes Freezing Mist, Borealis's Mist, Rotten Breath, Scarlet Aeonia, and Ekzykes's Decay.

There are not a lot of poison options aside from Poison Mist so if you wish to apply poison using incantations, Poison Mist is only our recommended option unless you're using a standard weapon then Poison Armament is a decent option to consider.

Use Talismans That Reduce Physical and Fire Damage and Bleed Buildup

Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman IconDragoncrest Greatshield Talisman Flamedrake Talisman +3 IconFlamedrake Talisman +3 Stalwart Horn Charm +2 IconStalwart Horn Charm +2

Chief Bloodfiend's main damage type is physical attacks with occassional fire+bleeding attacks mixed in. We highly recommend prioritizing equipping physical damage reduction talisman such as the Dragoncrest Greatshield to reduce the Chief Bloodfiend's damage output. Consider equipping the Flamedrake Talisman if you're often getting hit by Chief Bloodfiend's fire attacks.

Additionally, if you find yourself getting afflicted with blood loss during the fight, also consider equipping a Stalward Horn Charm as it reduces bleed buildup!

Chief Bloodfiend General Tips

Tips for Beating Chief Bloodfiend

Summon Spirit Ash for Support

The Chief Bloodfiend has deceptively fast and hard-hitting combos for its size, with its lethality compounded by the tight space you have to fight it in. Don't be afraid to use Spirit Ashes to draw attention away from you for more breathing room and space to attack.

Poke From Range

Despite the size of the arena and the speed of the Bloodfiend's combos, staying just outside the Chief Bloodfiend's range for poke damage is a viable tactic since once the Chief Bloodfiend starts a combo, it is fairly easy to avoid by running or walking backward.

Dodge Away From Blood Breath

Aside from its combos, the Chief Bloodfiend's blood breath is another way it can inflict bursts of damage, via Bleed, if you are not careful. Dodge backward from the bleed breath's limited range, as the Bloodfiend will spew its breath in succession and catch you if you try to close in.
