Bols, Carian Knight's slow animations allow you to spam spells at him as he's in the process of an attack. After an attack pattern, start firing spells such as Glintstone Pebble or Swift Glintstone Shard to maximize the damage you can deal.
Since you can't summon Spirit Ashes in this fight, it's better to stay near Bols, Carian Knight since his moveset is more predictable up close. He'll always target his front, so wait for an attack pattern before rolling behind him. You'll be able to cast your spells at that point.

Bols, Carian Knight's size makes it tempting to just wail away at him with a melee weapon. This can be deadly since despite his slow attacks, Bols will always deal heavy damage if you get hit. Remain patient and wait for him to finish an attack pattern. More often than not, he'll spend a few seconds to recover. That will be your opening to attack.

 Stomp: If you're underneath him, Bols, Carian Knight will sometimes stomp the ground to damage you. Dodge through as he raises his foot to avoid this since he brings it down quickly. Be ready to dodge again since he can do this multiple times. |
| Sword Attack Variations |

 Rushing Swipes: Bols runs past you as he does quick upwards swipe, then turns to do another swipe. Dodge to the side for the first swipe, then into Bols as he does the second. |
 Jumping Slam: Bols leaps forward slams his sword and fists to the ground. It can be hard to gauge the range of this so you can dodge into the attack as he's dropping. This also gives you an opening for a couple hits. |
 Charged Overhead Slam: Bols lifts his sword overhead and slams it to the ground. The initial slam is easy to avoid due to the long animation, but there will be an AoE aftershock that can still hit you. |
 Triple-Attack Combo: Bols does a quick swipe with his hand, stomps the ground, then swipes with his sword. If you dodge into the first two attacks, you'll end up behind him. This lets you avoid the sword swipe entirely and attack him freely. |

 Greatblade Phalanx: Bols casts and launches three tracking daggers. It's easier to avoid these if you're far from him, then just run to the side. |
 Roar: Bols roars at you, increasing his damage. You'll be knocked down if you get hit by the roar but he won't immediately attack, so you'll have a chance to dodge away. |
