You can find the Erdtree Avatar guarding the Minor Erdtree east of the Stargazer's Ruins. You need to cross the bridge close to the ruins to reach the isolated plateau where the Minor Erdtree is.
You can fight the Erdtree Avatar in the Mountaintops of the Giants as soon as you access the area through the Grand Lift of Rold.
This Erdtree Avatar is not particularly tougher than the one in Leyndell, but it has a special attack that creates a second Erdtree Avatar to fight alongside it once you deplete enough of its HP. A Level 100 character with significant attacking stat investment can potentially prevent the boss from summoning its double if it deals enough damage quickly.
Tips for Beating Erdtree Avatars |
---|
The Erdtree Avatar's high damage means tanky Spirit Ashes often struggle to deal with it unless sufficiently upgraded. Instead, summon Ash Spirits that can regenerate such as the Skeletal Militiamen.
While they don't do much damage, they are good at distracting the boss and will regenerate when killed provided that it doesn't get hit when they are regenerating.
For Erdtree Avatars in the later areas, the Mimic Tear is the best Spirit Ash to summon thanks to its sheer tankiness when fully upgraded.
It will also use the same weapons and spells as your character, which can make some of the later Erdtree Avatars trivial if exploiting their weakness.
The Erdtree Avatar's projectile attacks will home at the player. While you can outrun these attacks while riding Torrent, some of the later Erdtree Avatars such as the ones in Caelid and Leyndell, Royal Capital have very small boss arenas or prevent you from riding the Spectral Steed.
Use the environment as cover as soon as you see the Erdtree Avatar readying its projectile attack. In some boss locations such as Liurnia or Caelid, there are large golden pots that you can hide behind from and will block the projectiles. You can also hide behind the Minor Erdtree itself.
From the Stake of Marika near the Minor Erdtree in Eastern Liurnia, you'll spot a small cliff on your left that you can go up to. This provides ample distance between you and Erdtree Avatar, and fue to its slow movement, you have plenty of time to attack it with your bow or cast spells without getting hit.
Weapon Type Weaknesses | |
---|---|
Fire Weapons |
All of the Erdtree Avatars are very weak to Fire Damage and it's possible to quickly defeat even the stronger Avatars when powerstancing fast weapons such as katanas or straight swords equipped with Flame Art Ash of War.
For spellcasters, the incantations Flame Sling, Flame of the Fell God and Giantsflame Take Thee are great options to use against the boss.
Rykard's Rancor is also very effective against Erdtree Avatars due to their large size. This sorcery, however, requires hefty intelligence and faith investment to reach its full potential.
The Ash of War Flame of the Redmanes is very effective against the Erdtree Avatars, easily stunning them after two or three hits of the skill. This Ash of War deals higher spell damage with a Heavy Infusion, making it a great choice for pure Strength builds.
The Lordsworn Straight Sword is a good weapon to infuse this Ash of War with a Heavy Infusion due to its good Strength Scaling. This weapon also has a high critical rating, which means it can deal higher riposte damage that you can further boost with the Dagger Talisman.
Note: All Erdtree Avatars share the same basic attack patterns
Staff Attack Variations |
---|
Staff Combos: If you're fighting Erdtree Avatar up close, he will do several attacks with his staff, with a three-hit combo being the most common. He will swipe his staff from side to side, then end the pattern by slamming it to the ground. While you can dodge away to avoid these, you can also time your dodges to when he raises his staff and is just about to attack. This lets you attack him a few times once the combo ends. |
Lunging Attack: If you're keeping your distance from Erdtree Avatar, he will occassionally do a quick leap and slam his staff in your direction. The staff's reach is quite far so it's safer to dodge into the attack instead of away. |
Shards of Light Attack Information |
---|
Shards of Light: Erdtree Avatar will slam his staff into the ground and create an AoE blast of magic. The blast will create multiple yellow shards that will float momentarily before being launched at you. You can easily avoid these by simply running to the side as they're fired at you. |
Ground Slam Attack Variations |
---|
Body Slam: Erdtree Avatar will jump up and land in the same area, causing AoE damage. This is easy to telegraph since he'll light up yellow right before he jumps. The safest way to avoid getting hit is by dodging away twice. |
Stomp: Erdtree Avatar will lift then bring down his foot, causing AoE damage. This is fairly easy to evade, you can dodge away once he raises his foot. If you want to get some free hits in, you can also dodge into him right before he brings it down. |
