How to Guard Counter

How to Guard Counter

Guard Counter is a new combat mechanic in Elden Ring that allows a player to perform a powerful counterattack. Read on to learn how to perform a guard counter successfully and when to use them!

What is a Guard Counter?

A Way to Counterattack After Blocking an Attack

Guard counters are a brand new mechanic that allows you to counterattack immediately after guarding an enemy attack. Guard counters easily break the enemy's stance, opening an opportunity for a critical strike.

How to Perform a Guard Counter

Press R2 / RT Immediately After Blocking

First, you need to block an enemy attack with L1 / LB. Then, immediately after, unleash your strong attack by prssing R2 / RT to perform the guard counter. Guard counter timing is easier to time than parries which make them an important technique to use and master.

Best Used at the End of an Enemy's Combo

The guard counter is a bit slow to execute, so performing it in the middle of an enemy's combo isn't ideal as you will be open to receiving damage. Know your enemy's attack patterns and only use the guard counter when you're sure they won't follow up with another attack.
