Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Scadutree Avatar Weakness and Location

This is a guide for the Scadutree Avatar in the Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree. Learn about the Scadutree Avatar's location and weakness, how many phases the Scadutree Avatar has, as well as the best build against the Scadutree Avatar.

Scadutree Avatar Weakness

Weak to Fire

The Scadutree Avatar is weak to attacks that deal Fire damage (it's a plant). This element dealt the most damage per hit when we used different elemental grease on the same weapon against the Scadutree Avatar.

The Blasphemous Blade works extremely well against this boss since it can nuke the boss using its Taker's Flames ash of war. If you're using a Strength build and a normal weapon, simply switching to Fire affinity or imbuing it with Fire Grease will significantly increase damage.

Faith builds can use Catch Flame or O, Flame! for quick but short-ranged bursts of fire damage but if you can find a larger opening, Giantsflame Take Thee and Burn, O Flame! are better choices.

Aim for Its Head to Deal More Damage

The Scadutree Avatar's weakness is its head, with attacks that hit it dealing significantly more damage than regular hits to its body. Since this boss has 3 separate HP bars to deplete, make sure to prioritize attacks to the head whenever possible.

If you're using a melee build, wait for its attack chains to end since its head stoops to your level at the end of the animation. Ranged and spellcasting builds can simply lock on to the head to deal better damage.

Best Build Against Scadutree Avatar

Fire Weapon is Recommended

Blasphemous Blade Icon Blasphemous Blade Rellana Rellana's Twin Blades

The Scadutree Avatar is mainly weak to fire damage so weapons with Fire affinity are obvious choices for this fight. You can use weapons that deal split fire damage, are switched to a Fire affinity, or imbued with Fire Grease.

If you've invested a decent amount of points in Strength and Faith, you'll be able to nuke this boss with the Blasphemous Blade and its Taker's Flames ash of war. Allot more points to Faith to increase Taker's Flames' damage as it scales purely with this stat.

Imbue Regular Weapons With Fire Ashes of War

: Flame SpearAsh of War: Flame Spear : Flaming StrikeAsh of War: Flaming Strike

You can also just use a non-unique melee weapon and change its ash of war to either Flame Spear or Flaming Strike. These ashes of war not only deal fire damage but also imbues your weapon with fire element.

Increase Fire Power With Fire Scorpion Charm

Talisman of the Dread ImageTalisman of the Dread Carian Filigreed Crest ImageCarian Filigreed Crest

Your weapon's fire damage can be increased further with Fire Scorpion Charm at the cost of lower damage negation values. Because of its drawback, this talisman is recommended only if you have a high Scadutree Blessing level. Taker's Flames' damage can also be improved with Talisman of the Dread.

If you will be relying on your ash of war, make sure to equip the Shard of Alexander as well for another damage boost, and increase FP efficiency with Carian Filigreed Crest if you have a spare talisman slot.

Use Catch Flame or Burn, O Flame for Spells

Catch Flame Icon Catch Flame Burn, O Flame! Icon Burn, O Flame!

Fire spells are best to take up your memory slots if you're running a magic-based build.

Catch Flame is for dealing quick fire damage due to it having almost zero casting time, allowing you to cast it even right after dodging an attack. Burn, O Flame! is for larger windows like when the Scadutree Avatar is recovering after using an attack or combo, or after the explosion attack during the third phase.

Use Dragon Talismans for All-Rounded Damage Negation Boost

The Scadutree Avatar deals both physical and magic attacks so gearing to add negation on both damage types should help you survive longer.

If you're willing to respec your stats through Rennala's rebirth, we recommended going with a Blasphemous Blade build to defeat the Scadutree Avatar.

This build lets you deal fire damage consistently through the Blasphemous Blade's innate fire damage and its Taker's Flames ability. You can also carry more FP flasks than HP flasks with you using this build as Taker's Flames regenerates some health on each hit.

Buff Yourself First With Flame, Grant Me Strength and Golden Vow

The Finger Seal recommended in this build is only used to cast Flame, Grant Me Strength and Golden Vow before engaging the Scadutree Avatar. If you're planning to use offensive fire incantations, you can use the Erdtree Seal instead.

Use Taker's Flames While the Boss is Recovering After an Attack

Try to only use Taker's Flames while the Scadutree Avatar is recovering after an attack or combo as the ash of war takes about two seconds before unleashing the wave of flame at its target. Memorize its attack patterns and find a good window to cast Taker's Flames before the boss attacks again.

Scadutree Avatar General Tips

Tips for the Scadutree Avatar

Available Summons Spirit Ashes

Deplete its HP Bar 3 Times to Defeat It

The Scadutree Avatar has 3 phases. You'll need to deplete its HP bar 3 times to defeat it. After each victory, the Avatar will respawn with 75% of its HP back, repeating the fight but this time with additional moves and attacks.

Land a Critical Hit on the Avatar After Depleting its HP

Elden Ring - Scadutree Avatar Critical Hit

Once the Scadutree Avatar's HP reaches 0, it won't immediately die. Instead, it will land on the ground and become vulnerable to a critical hit. Make sure to perform the critical hit. If you don't, the Avatar will despawn and restart the fight (with that round not counting as a kill).

Avoid Glowing Spots on the Ground

Occasionally, the Scadutree Avatar will use an attack that causes the area surrounding it to glow. The glowing spots indicate where its brambles will appear, so position yourself outside the glowing spots to avoid taking damage.

Time Your Dodge or Block Its Sacred Explosion

During the 3rd round of the fight, the Scadutree Avatar will start using an AoE attack that hits the entire arena. The only way to dodge this attack for most builds is to i-frame into it using a well-timed roll.

A good indicator for the dodge timing is to dodge right as the explosion triggers since the explosion itself does not deal damage. If you're having difficulty timing the dodge, consider blocking the attack (you'll take damage but it'll be less than what a regular hit does).

Scadutree Avatar Location

Found Nesting in the Scadutree Base

World View Map Location

The Scadutree Avatar is found at the depths of the Sunken Chapel. To reach the area, you must first drain the water that's flooding the chapel then descend the elevator to find the Scadutree Base.

How to Get to the Scadutree Avatar

1
The Scautree Avatar can only be reached through the east gate of Shadow Keep. To get here, you must circle around the east side of the keep by going through Moorth Ruins until you reach the Church District Entrance.
2
The next step is to drain the water surrounding the Church District. You must find the lever for the canal gates to access the lower levels of this area.

Refer to our Church District Walkthrough to learn how to drain the water in the area!
3
Once the water is clear, descend to street level and locate the Cathedral near the large tree in the center of the district and head inside. Either kill or ignore Wego, Fire Knight Elder then continue onwards to your right, following the path.
4
You will come across a room with a balcony overlooking it connected by two stairs. Once you are finished investigating around the room, proceed under the balcony and open the doors.
5
Opening the doors should lead you to an elevator that will take you to a cave with a Site of Grace. Following the linear path on this cave should lead you to a bridge. Cross this bridge and go down the set of stairs to your right to take you to another Site of Grace.
6
By this point, you should already be facing the Scadutree Avatar in front of you. All that is left to do now is prepare yourself for the upcoming fight.
