Age of Stars Explanation

A Mistranslation May Cause Some Confusion

The English version of Ranni's ending dialogue leaves the fate of The Lands Between somewhat vague, since it can be interpreted in many different ways.

It seems that the localization mistranslated her ending, which is what caused the confusion to what it meant. Taking the context of the original Japanese script sheds more light into the Age of Stars and leaves less room for ambiguity.

In the original Japanese script, rather than Ranni announcing that the chill night is encompassing everyone, she is telling everyone that it is actually saying that it is going to be far, far away.

The fear, doubt, and loneliness she refers to is not for everyone, but for herself, referencing her journey into the stars as she ascends into godhood with the Tarnished as her consort.

Further Dialogue at Ranni's Rise

After finishing Ranni's questline, you may return to Ranni's Rise to get more context on her ending. Head up to her room and talk to the doll in your possession.

In the English version, she seems to imply that she is removing everyone's capability of feeling emotions, but this has also been a translation error.

The original Japanese script actually expresses that Ranni wants to keep her order far away from the denizens of The Lands Between, because she has seen the direct influence of the Golden Order and wants to prevent another Shattering.

Having the order of the moon and stars far away means that they will be unable to directly influence the lives of those in The Lands Between, nor will the denizens be able to tangibly command its power. This means that the power that Ranni's order has will be unable to be fought over, unlike what happened with the Elden Ring.

In the end, having this compromise means that while Ranni will be unable to directly intervene in the lives of those in The Lands Between, the people will be able to choose their own paths freely without the influence of any gods.
