Sir Ansbach Questline Walkthrough

Quest Objectives

1. Talk to Sir Ansbach at the Main Gate Cross

Speak to Sir Ansbach at the Main Gate Cross Site of Grace to begin his questline. You can reach Sir Ainsbach by heading west from the Three-Path Cross Site of Grace in Gravesite Plain.

Ansbach will ask you to tell him if you find more of Miquella's crosses similar to the one nearby. This will open more dialogue from Ansbach, but is entirely optional.

2. Find the Cerulean Coast Cross (Optional)

Map Location World View

The first cross you can find will be the Cerulean Coast Cross at the Southern Shore region. From the Cerulean Coast site of grace, head south until you discover one of Miquella's crosses along a coastal cliff. Interact with it before returning to Ansbach.

Back at the Main Gate Cross, speak to Ansbach and choose the option, Speak of the cross at the coast. This will inform about where Miquella shed part of himself, leaving St. Trina behind in his quest for godhood.

3. Find the Scaduview Cross (Optional)

Map Location World View

The next cross will be found on a large cliff above the Fort of Reprimand in Scadu Altus. To reach the Scaduview Cross, you'll need to unseal a Sealed Spiritspring to its north. Once there, interact with the cross before returning to Ansbach.

Back at the Main Gate Cross, speak to Ansbach again and choose the option, Speak of the cross where the eye was abandoned. Ansbach will remark at the significance of golden eyes in the old order and wonder how far Miquella is willing to go to become a god.

4. Approach the Shadow Keep to Break Miquella's Charm

From the Highroad Cross Site of Grace continue following the road north until you reach the Shadow Keep. As you get closer to its gates, a message will appear on your screen saying:

"Somewhere a great rune has broken. And so too, a powerful charm."

This message references Miquella finally shedding his Great Rune (you'll find it in the possession of the Scadutree Avatar). When this triggers, NPC questlines will advance, so make sure to speak to Freyja, Leda, Moore, Thiollier, and the Hornsent before exploring any further.

Somewhere a Great Rune has Broken Meaning

5. Find the Secret Rite Scroll

Once the great rune breaks, return to Ansbach at the Main Gate Cross and exhaust his dialogue. Then, reload the area to get him to move to the Storehouse, First Floor of the Shadow Keep.

When you've confirmed that he's moved, the next step will be to secure the Secret Rite Scroll found in the Storehouse, Fourth Floor level. Follow the steps below to find this key item for Ansbach:

How to Get the Secret Rite Scroll
1

From the Storehouse, Fourth Floor site of grace, exit west and turn left as you reach the outer walkway of the tower.
2

After turning left, use the stairs you see to your south east to reach the area with boats and a patrolling Fire Knight.
3

Defeat the Fire Knight before using the stairs he came down from to reach the next level of the Storehouse tower.
4

At the top of the stairs, face north east and you should see a new staircase that leads down. Use it to go down to a different section of the Storehouse, Fourth Floor.
5

Once you reach the bottom of the stairs, enter through the large door opposite the three shadowy enemies.
6

Inside this small room, you will find the Secret Rite Scroll on top of one of the desks. Loot it before making your way to Freyja in the levels above.

Speak to Freyja at the Storehouse, Seventh Floor Before Delivering the Scroll

Freyja at the Storehouse Seventh Floor

After securing the Secret Rite Scroll, continue to the upper levels of the Storehouse until you discover the Storehouse, Seventh Floor site of grace. Here, you'll find Freyja trying to find out about the vow between Miquella and Radahn.

Exhaust her dialogue so you can get the Letter for Freyja key item from Ansbach in the next step. If you skip this step and end up without the key item, you'll miss out on getting the Golden Lion Shield from Freyja's questline.

Redmane Freyja Quest and Location

6. Give Ansbach the Secret Rite Scroll

Once you have the Secret Rite Scroll, go and find Ansbach in the Storehouse, First Floor. Exhaust his dialogue and follow the steps below when delivering the Secret Rite Scroll:

1

Tell him about Freyja's decision
Appears if you spoke to Freyja in the previous step. Ensures you can get the next dialogue option after you deliver the Secret Rite Scroll.
2

Hand over Secret Rite Scroll
After telling Ansbach about Freya, deliver the Secret Rite Scroll. Ansbach will conclude that Miquella plans to resurrect Radahn using Mohg's corpse at the gate of divinity.
3 Reload the Area
In order to get the next Freyja dialogue option to appear, reload the area by quitting out to the main menu and loading back into the game.
4

Speak to Ansbach
After reloading the area, speak to Ansbach again and he will give you the key item, Letter for Freyja. You can then deliver this to her at the Storehouse, Seventh Floor to receive the Golden Lion Shield.

7. Progress Leda's Quest

Ansbach's questline progress is tied to Leda's questline. If you haven't spoken to her after the breaking of Miquella's Great Rune, return to the Highroad Cross and help her choose who to investigate for potential to betray Miquella.

Regardless of your answer, she will always be suspicious of Hornsent, triggering an invasion at the Shadow Keep that has you choose to help either Leda or the Hornsent. If you chose to help Leda, she will target Ansbach next.

Needle Knight Leda Questline and Location

Ansbach Invasion is Skipped if You Helped Hornsent Kill Leda

Helping Hornsent Defeat Leda

If you helped Hornsent defeat Leda during the Shadow Keep invasion, she will no longer invade Ansbach. This guarantees that Ansbach becomes a gold summon for the Enir-Ilim NPC fight and the final boss once you deliver the Secret Rite Scroll to him.

8. Help Ansbach or Needle Knight Leda

Ansbach Storehouse Invasion Signs

If you helped Leda kill Hornsent or skipped their Shadow Keep invasion entirely, she will come for Ansbach next. Return to Ansbach's spot in the Storehouse, First Floor to find the red and gold summon signs for the invasions.

Essentially, the choice of who to help boils down to the rewards you want to get for the entirety of Ansbach's quest. Choose the gold summon sign to help Ansbach or choose the red summon sign to assist Leda in killing him.

Choice Outcome and Rewards
Help Ansbach
(Gold summon sign)
Ansbach lives, allowing him to be a gold summon for the Enir-Ilim NPC fight and the final boss fight. This route allows you to obtain his weapon, Obsidian Lamina, and his Furious Blade of Ansbach incantation after beating the final boss.
Swift Slash
・Leda's Rune
Ansbach's Longbow
Kill Ansbach
(Red summon sign)
Ansbach dies, ending his questline and making him unavailable as a gold summon against the two fights in Enir-Ilim.
・Ansbach's armor set
Ansbach's Longbow
Retaliatory Crossed-Tree (Obtained by talking to Leda again at the Highroad Cross)

We recommend helping Ansbach to get both his gold summon signs in Enir-Ilim and the rest of his equipment after you beat the final boss. However, do note that this choice locks you out of getting the Retaliatory Crossed-Tree talisman until your next DLC playthrough.

9. Defeat Needle Knight Leda and Her Allies in Enir-Ilim

After burning the Sealing Tree and teleporting to Enir-Ilim, you will eventually reach the Cleansing Chamber Anteroom where Leda and her allies will confront you. You will have to defeat them in order to reach the arena of the DLC's final boss.

If you gave Ansbach the Secret Rite Scroll and he lived through the Leda invasion, he will be an available gold summon for this fight. After defeating Leda and her group, you'll meet Ansbach one final time after taking the elevator up to the Divine Gate. Tell him you killed Mohg before challenging the final boss.

NPC List and Summon Conditions

NPC Faction Summon Conditions
Ansbach Ally Will be available as a gold summon if you gave him the Secret Rite Scroll and helped him against Leda's invasion.
Thiollier Ally Will be available as a gold summon if you completed his quest and told him St. Trina's last words at the end of it.
Sanguine Noble Nataan Ally Replaces Ansbach as a gold summon if Ansbach dies during his quest.
Leda Hostile Always appears as hostile.
Dryleaf Dane Hostile Always appears as hostile.
Freyja Hostile Freyja joins Leda as an invader if you delivered Ansbach's Letter to Freyja to her during her quest.
Moore Hostile Moore joins Leda as an invader if you chose the Put it behind you dialogue option during his quest.
Hornsent Hostile Hornsent fights you if he was not killed during his quest-related invasions before before burning the Sealing Tree. He will also fight you if you do not summon him for the Messmer boss fight.

10. Defeat the Final Boss to Obtain Sir Ansbach's Equipment

Ansbach Gold Summon Sign for the Final Boss

Similar to the NPC fight earlier, Ansbach will be a gold summon for the final boss fight if you completed his questline. If you completed Thiollier's quest, he will also be available as a gold summon.

After defeating the boss, refresh the world and you will find Ansbach's corpse nearby. Loot it to get Ansbach's unique scythe, Obsidian Lamina, Ansbach's full armor set, and the Furious Blade of Ansbach incantation.

Summoning is Not Required to Get Ansbach's Equipment

Ansbach Corpse After Final Boss

Do note that you do not need to summon Ansbach for the final boss fight to get his items. As long as his gold summon sign appears outside the boss room, you're guaranteed to get his items once the fight ends.

However, there are advantages to summoning him. Unlike multiplayer gold summons, summoning Ansbach and Thiollier for help won't disqualify you from using Spirit Ashes. You can effectively create a 4-man gank squad for the final boss if you wanted.

Sir Ansbach Location

By the Main Gate Cross in Front of Belurat, Tower Settlement

Sir Ansbach can be found waiting beside the Main Gate Cross site of grace, just at the foot of the entrance to Belurat, Tower Settlement. To reach this area, head north from the Gravesite Plain site of grace until you reach the Three-Path Cross. From there, head west until you find the Main Gate Cross.

Do NPC Quests Before Burning the Sealing Tree

After defeating Messmer and Romina, then setting fire to the Sealing Tree behind the Church of the Bud, all of Miquella's followers' NPC quests will stop. Make sure to do the quests of Sir Ansbach, and of the other followers of Miquella, before burning the Sealing Tree.

Ansbach's Longbow is Guaranteed to Drop During the Invasion

Ansbach's Longbow (one of the best bows in the game) is guaranteed to drop regardless of who you decide to help during the Storehouse, First Floor invasion. If you help Ansbach, you'll get his bow as well as Leda's Rune.

If you help Leda, you will get the bow, Ansbach's armor set, and the Retaliatory Crossed-Tree talisman. However, do note that this option locks you out of getting Obsidian Lamina and the Furious Blade of Ansbach.

Ansbach's Longbow Stats and Scaling

Ansbach's Armor Set Drops After He Dies to the Final Boss or Leda

Head Wise Man's Mask
Chest Ansbach's Attire
Arms Ansbach's Manchettes
Legs Ansbach's Boots

Ansbach's Armor Set can be obtained if you completed his questline and defeated the final boss of the DLC. It can be looted off of his corpse at the final boss arena. His questline is considered complete if you find his gold summon sign outside the final boss room.

Alternatively, the full armor set can also be obtained if you chose to help Leda kill Ansbach midway through his quest. However, this locks you out of getting Obsidian Lamina and the Furious Blade of Ansbach.

Sir Ansbach Information and Lore

Former Pureblood Knight

Sir Ansbach once served Mohg, Lord of Blood, as a Pureblood Knight. He now follows Miquella's footsteps to learn more about what has happened to his former lord, while also trying to make up for his past failures.

As a former Pureblood Knight, Ansbach is adept at using bloodflames and infusing them to his weapon. This technique, the Furious Blade of Ansbach, can be obtained at the end of his questline as an incantation.

Goes After Miquella to Avenge Mohg

After receiving the Secret Rite Scroll from the Tarnished, Ansbach finds out Miquella plans to use Mohg's corpse to be a vessel for his king consort, and is the reason Mohg's body was delivered to Miquella after his death in the palace.
