This build infuses the Milady with the Quality affinity of the Wing Stance Ash of War from the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Using consumables like Fire Grease is optional, but otherwise, the Milady's highest possible scaling after infusion is B in both STR and DEX, meaning we should build Milady primarily for physical damage.
To buff this build's damage to HP and poise, we will be using the incantations Golden Vow and Flame, Grant Me Strength, a Wondrous Physick mix of Stonebarb-Shrouding Cracked Tear and Thorny Cracked Tear, and the talismans Rellana's Cameo, Millicent's Prosthesis, and the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia.
Wing Stance is an Ash of War exclusive to Light Greatswords, one of several DLC-exclusive weapon classes. Holding this stance gives you a new moveset to use in battle, the attacks of which all deal great poise damage: a fast three-swing normal attack and a jumping thrust heavy attack.
Wing Stance Ash of War Location and Effect
The Wing Stance normal attack is powerful not just because of its speed, but also because of how smoothly it combos into other moves such as a Wing Stance heavy attack follow-up, a non-Wing Stance two-swing heavy attack, or even consecutive Wing Stance normal attacks for as long as your FP holds out.
The Wing Stance heavy attack not only deals good stance damage, but can also serve as an alternative to your jump attacks due to its fast leap and extra height, which allows it to dodge sweeping attacks, as well as its ability to instantly close distance to get into melee range against your enemy.
To maximize your Wing Stance combo damage, it's important to stack buffs before important encounters like boss fights or mini-boss fights. Timing will also be key so that you aren't locked into animations mid-attack or mid-recovery, or while holding the Wing Stance.
How to Buff Before a Boss | |
---|---|
1 | Cast Golden Vow for a damage buff and defense buff. |
2 | Drink your Wondrous Physick for additional buffs or survival purposes. The optimal mix for damage is Stonebarb-Shrouding Cracked Tear with the Thorny Cracked Tear. |
3 | Cast Flame, Grant Me Strength for a physical damage buff. Must be cast as late as possible during prep due to its short uptime. |
4 | Optional: Apply Grease to your weapon for bonus elemental or status damage. Drawstring Grease is preferred for faster application so that you still maximize Flame, Grant Me Strength's uptime. |
5 | With Rellana's Cameo: Hold Wing Stance to enhance your initial Wing Stance attacks. This step might have to be skipped if the enemy you're facing attacks too quickly for you to get the buff from holding the stance. |
All Buffs and Debuffs and What They Do
This is an early DLC build, meaning this setup is viable even at Level 150 by allocating some points away from VGR, MND, and END towards DEX and STR instead.
If that's your starting point, you may also want to use the Keen affinity on the Milady first to maximize the damage bonus from DEX scaling before hitting the soft cap, then build STR and the other survivability stats afterwards.
Recommended Level | ||
---|---|---|
192 | ||
Stat | Points | Explanation |
VGR | 60 | 60 Vigor should be your target for a high enough HP value to comfortably tank high-damage attacks from bosses. |
MND | 25 | You'll want at least 25 Mind to have enough FP to cast Golden Vow, Flame, Grant Me Strength, and several Wing Stance normal to heavy attack combos, which will be enough to stance-break opponents like Giants before you need to drink a Cerulean Flask. |
END | 30 | 30 Endurance is a good value to have so you can equip the Milady and a mixture of medium and heavy armor pieces while still being able to medium roll. This also allows you to swap out load talismans like the Great-Jar's Arsenal for attack or defense talismans instead. |
STR | 54 | STR should be prioritized slightly less than DEX, as its scaling is slightly lower even if they both show up as B scaling on Quality affinity. In this case, you can cap the stat off at 54 since you will get an effective 81 STR due to stat multipliers when you two-hand a weapon. |
DEX | 60 | The Milady scales highest with DEX, so try to at least reach the soft cap of 60 before leveling up STR to maximize the split scaling of the Quality affinity. |
INT | 9 | INT will not be needed. |
FAI | 25 | You should have at least 25 Faith to access the buffing incantations necessary to maximize your physical damage. |
ARC | 8 | ARC will not be needed. |
VGR | MND | END | STR | DEX | INT | FAI | ARC |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
12 | 11 | 13 | 12 | 15 | 9 | 8 | 8 |
The ideal starting class for the Wing Stance Milady build is the Samurai for its stat allocation favoring STR and DEX, with generous starting stats for VGR, MND and END as well.
While the low starting FAI means Golden Vow specifically may take longer to render accessible, this is a comfortable starting point for the pure physical playstyle that you are aiming for due to its initial mix of damage and survivability, plus its headstart in DEX points to reach the soft cap.
Before hitting the DLC, make sure to respec your stats by offering a Larval Tear to Rennala at the Academy of Raya Lucaria in Liurnia. You can do this before going to the DLC since the Milady can be obtained without having to fight any DLC bosses.

Milady is found in a chest on top of a tower in the western area of Castle Ensis. You can reach this tower quickly from the Castle Front Site of Grace.
The Finger Seal can be bought from the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold for 800 Runes. Since this is a physical build, you won't be requiring higher-scaling Seals, as you just need a Seal to apply buffs rather than deal damage with spells.

The Wing Stance Ash of War is found at the top of a tower in Castle Ensis near the Castle-Lord's Chamber Site of Grace. Head out the balcony, and you'll see the tower to your left. Jump off the left side of the balcony to reach it.
Wing Stance Ash of War Location and Effect
After defeating Rellana at the end of Castle Ensis, you'll be able to buy all four pieces of Rellana's armor set set from Finger Reader Enia at the Roundtable Hold for a total of 45,000 Runes. Wearing the complete set will allow you to reach the exact poise breakpoint of 51 while still being able to medium roll.
Otherwise, there are no specific armor sets that are necessary for the Milady Wing Stance build, so choose armor based on your equip load, damage negation needs, and your preferred drip.

Rellana's Cameo is on an altar inside a church guarded by Moonrithyll, Carian Knight, in Castle Ensis. Both Moonrithyll and this church will naturally be on your path as you progress through the dungeon, so you shouldn't miss it.
This is an important talisman for enhancing attacks after holding Wing Stance, but also a situational one, as it depends on if you can hold the stance long enough without getting hit or staggered by enemies.
Rellana's Cameo Location and Effects
The rest of the talismans used in this build can be obtained from the base game. The most tedious talisman to obtain here would be Millicent's Prosthesis, as it requires you to reach the secret area, Miquella's Haligtree, and to complete Millicent's questline.
For endgame or NG+ alternatives, the Shard of Alexander can further boost your Wing Stance damage, while Millicent's Prosthesis can be swapped, or used simultaneously, with the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia if you choose to assist Millicent at the end of her questline.
Talisman | Effect and How to Get |
---|---|
Carian Filigreed Crest | Effect:
Lowers FP consumed by skills.
How to Get: Can be bought from Iji for 5000 Runes at the outskirts of Caria Manor in Liurnia. Requires you to have helped Blaidd complete his quest in Limgrave. |
Millicent's Prosthesis | Effect:
Boosts dexterity, raises attack power with successive attacks.
How to Get: Obtained by invading and killing Millicent at the end of her questline. Locks you out of getting the Rotten Winged Sword Insignia until NG+. |
Rotten Winged Sword Insignia | Effect:
Greatly raises attack power with successive attacks.
How to Get: Obtained by helping Millicent at the end of her questline. Locks you out of getting Millicent's Prosthesis until NG+. |
Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman | Effect:
Enormously boosts physical damage negation.
How to Get: Looted from a chest at the upper level of the cathedral filled with Kindred of Rot in Elphael. The upper level is reached by jumping down from the cathedral roof while coming from the Drainage Channel site of grace. |
Both the incantations required to buff your damage can be found in the base game. Neither of them are gated by a major boss, allowing you to pick them up even if you're in the middle of a DLC run.
Spells | Effect and How to Get |
---|---|
Golden Vow |
Effect: Increases attack and defense for self and nearby allies. Looted from the Corpse-Stench Shack in Mt. Gelmir. On approach, you will be invaded by Anastasia, Tarnished Eater. |
Flame, Grant Me Strength |
Effect: Raises physical and fire-affinity attack power. Looted from a corpse in between two fire-breathing Giant Heads, behind Fort Gael in the region of Caelid. |
We recommend using Radahn's Great Rune, as the bonus FP and Stamina it provides will allow you do more Wing Stance combos before having to drink a Cerulean Flask, and also ensure you have enough stamina to roll if needed, even after consecutive Wing Stance attacks.
As defeating Radahn is a prerequisite for the DLC, you should have this Great Rune on-hand. However, before you can use it, you'll need to activate it at the Divine Tower of Caelid, then consume a Rune Arc before big fights to get its effects.
