You can find Battlemage Hugues at the Sellia Evergaol in the southern part of the Dragonbarrow in the Caelid region.

When to Fight Battlemage Hugues

You can fight Battlemage Hugues as soon as you reach the Caelid region either by travelling from Limgrave or by using the teleport gate that D, Hunter of the Dead reveals to access Gurranq at the Bestial Sanctum.

Fight at Level 50+

Battlemage Hugues is a relatively simple boss that, while capable of dealing high magic damage, is slow and has predictable attacks that are easy to dodge. Level up your character to at least Level 50 and allocate some stats to Vigor to make the fight easier.

Hide Behind Branches to Block Attacks

Sellia Evergaol has large branches surrounding it that you can use to block Hugues' ranged spells, particularly his deadly Cannon of Haima.

If you see Hugues charging this spell, simply move to the left side branch to avoid getting hit.

Stagger with Strong Attacks

Although Battlemage Hugues has above average poise, it's still a humanoid enemy and will get staggered by sufficiently strong attacks.

Jumping attacks from colosal swords and colossal weapons, as well as the Rock Sling spell, will easily stagger him and even open him up for a riposte.

Take Advantage of His Weaknesses

Battlemage Hugues' bulk is offset by his multiple weakness to common damage types, with fast weapons that deal standard, slash, and thrust weapons easily making short work of him.

Hugues is also susceptible to weapons and spells that deal Holy damage, such as the Winged Scythe and the Sacred Blade weapon buff.
