Pokemon Legends Arceus takes the series in a new direction, fusing action with RPG elements.

As you explore, you’ll encounter Pokémon in the wild—observe their behavior, then sneak up, aim your Poké Ball, and throw! Your ally Pokémon can also battle Pokémon you hope to catch.

Not Fully Open World

Though you are able to explore vast areas of the untamed landscape, the map of Pokemon Legends Arceus is not fully open world. Instead it consists of several fully explorable areas that you can travel to from the game's central hub, Jubilife Village. Once you have completed your mission, you will need to return to the village for your next objectives.

As compared to fully open-world games like Breath of the Wild, Pokemon Legends: Arceus has an exploration style closer to the Monster Hunter series, in which players are locked into exploring individual sections of a full world map and return to a central location between expeditions.

When out in the field, base Camps also serve as outposts for your work outside of Jubilife Village. You can stop by one to heal, sleep, craft items, and report your research progress to Professor Laventon.

Not an MMO Game

Pokemon Legends Arceus Trading Post

Pokemon Legends Arceus will not be an MMO game, but it will have some online features. Though no multiplayer features have been confirmed, the game is listed as playable by up to 2 players on the Nintendo website so it is possible that co op features are in store. Players will also be able to trade Pokemon with one another online.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus will stay true to its core Pokemon mechanic. You will still need to catch all the Pokemon in the old Sinnoh region to complete your Pokedex.

New Catching Mechanics

Catching a Pokemon
Unlike its predecessors, this game will allow players to catch some wild Pokemon without actually needing to battle them. If you are able to successfully sneak up on a wild Pokemon, you can simply aim the Pokeball of old, and let it fly!

Alternatively, you can do it the old fashioned way and engage the Pokemon in a battle until you get it in the red before throwing a Poke Ball to catch it.

Pokemon games have traditionally had turn-based combat where Pokemon would take turns in dealing out their attacks. However with the new Agile Style and Strong Style moves, turn order can now change.

Previous Pokemon games have the same pattern of collecting Gym Badges or Z-Crystals in order to challenge the main league. In Pokemon Legends: Arceus however, you will need to fulfill different missions and requests given to you by the residents of Jubilife Village and complete the Pokedex of the Hisui region.

Return of Ride Pokemon

Ride Pokemon has made a comeback in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Players can ride Wyrdeer, Ursaluna, Basculegion, Sneasler, and Hisuian Braviary to travel across Hisui easily.
