How to Catch Wild Pokemon

Pokemon Legends Arceus Wild Pokemon

The trailer revealed 3 types of wild Pokemon interactions you'll encounter in the game. Some wild Pokemon, such as Bidoof, are calm and will ignore/won't run away from you, even as you go near them. Other Pokemon like Starly are skittish and will run away when you approach them.

Lastly, there are also aggressive wild Pokemon who will attack you immediately or if you fail your first catch attempt. If you fail the first catch, the Pokemon will enter an alert state, where you must battle it in order to catch it.

Engaging an unaware Pokemon in battle might allow you an extra move

Pokemon Legends Arceus Pokemon Battle

You can engage a wild Pokemon in battle by throwing out your Pokemon near or directly at the wild Pokemon. If you throw out your partner Pokemon directly at a wild Pokemon that has not become alert to your presence, there's a chance you'll be afforded an extra move in the battle. The move order can be seen on the right side of the battle menu.

You can use berries to lure Pokemon

Pokemon Legends Arceus Berries Lure

You can throw a berry near a wild Pokemon to lure it to a certain location and make it distracted as its eating. Doing this can make the wild Pokemon distracted or face a certain direction, so it will be easier to sneak up on them.

Exp. Candy Revealed as Item

Pokemon Legends Arceus Exp Candy

Exp. Candy S is shown briefly in the trailer as a reward for completing the request Big Buizel, Little Buizel. Exp. Candies come in different sizes (XS, S, M, L, and XL) and increase the Exp. of your Pokemon to varying degrees, depending on the size. With the inclusion of Exp. Candy S, it's safe to assume that the other sizes of Exp. Candy will return as well.

This marks the return of Exp. Candies in the mainline series games, after their introduction in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Pokedex Completion via Research Tasks

Pokemon Legends Arceus Survey Corps

After venturing out into the region, catching wild Pokemon, and completing Research Tasks, talk to Professor Laventon to hand in your Survey Report, which will update your Pokedex, increase your Survey Corps Rank, and earn you money, which can then be used to purchase items and materials that will help in your next survey mission.

Missions and Requests added to Arc Phone

Pokemon Legends Arceus Requests

Missions are objectives that will allow you to advance through the game's main story, while Requests are side objectives you can receive by talking to various NPCs found on the map. Both missions and requests appear on the map on your Arc Phone after you've accepted and began them.

Types of Requests

The objectives of requests are minor tasks mostly completed by battling and capturing Pokemon in the wild. Some of the objectives of requests are as follows:

  • Discovering a specific Pokemon
  • Finding a variety of different items
  • Defeating a “powerful Pokemon” (most likely Alpha Pokemon) in battle
  • Catching a certain number of 1 specific Pokemon

Using Agile and Strong Styles in Battle

Pokemon Legends Arceus Strong Style

You can cycle between Agile and Strong styles by pressing the L and R buttons when on the selected move. Additionally, it was also revealed that using either style move in battle reduces more of the move's PP than when the move is used regularly.

Throw Balms to Calm Frenzied Noble Pokemon

Pokemon Legends Arceus Frenzied Noble

The battles with the frenzied Noble Pokemon require you to throw balms made up of their preferred food at them until they calm down, all while dodging their attacks. Its frenzy will be depicted in a bar at the top of the screen. Fully deplete the bar to calm the Noble Pokemon and win the battle.

At certain points during the fight, the Noble Pokemon will let its guard down, which is when you can throw out a Pokemon and battle the frenzied Noble Pokemon in a regular Pokemon battle. Depleting its HP in this Pokemon battle will not result in you winning the overall fight, as you will have to continue throwing balms at it until its frenzy bar is depleted.

Collect Crafting Materials in the Wild

Pokemon Legends Arceus Crafting Materials

The gameplay preview shows the methods of collecting crafting materials in the wild. You can collect materials via summoning a Pokemon to break rocks and knocking items out of trees, picking up plants, and automatically after capturing wild Pokemon.

New Alpha Pokemon Revealed

Tangela and Walrein were revealed to be Alpha Pokemon in the gameplay preview. Alpha Pokemon are bigger and stronger wild Pokemon that have red eyes and are more aggressive towards the player.

Taking Too Much Damage Leads to Blacking Out

Pokemon Legends Arceus Black Out

If your character takes too much damage when fighting and dodging attacks from a wild Pokemon, they will black out and be sent back to the base camp. After blacking out, you will also lose some of the items in your inventory, which will be shown to you in a screen before you return to base camp.

Summon Rideable Pokemon Anywhere

Pokemon Legends Arceus Rideable Pokemon

It was confirmed in the gameplay preview that you can summon rideable Pokemon with a press of the + button. On land, you can cycle between Wyrdeer (who traverses on land) and Hisuian Braviary (who traverses the skies) and switch between them seamlessly.

Private Lodgings Located in Jubilife Village

Pokemon Legends Arceus Lodgings Jubilife

Your character will have their own lodgings in Jubilife Village. The gameplay trailer reveals you can interact with and investigate certain items in your lodgings and also a bed where you'll most likely be able to sleep until a certain time of day, just like with the bed located at the Base Camp.

Trade Merit Points for Items at Trading Post

Pokemon Legends Arceus Trading Post

At the trading post, you can trade Pokemon with other players and also trade Merit Points for certain items. Not much else is known about Merit Points and what these items are, since they're only shown in passing in the trailer, but it could be speculated that the items could be rare or valuable, with the Merit Points used to obtained them being somehow tied to trading with other players.

Stealth Rock Does Direct Damage

Pokemon Legends Arceus Stealth Rock

During the fight with Kleavor in the gameplay preview, Kleavor was shown using the move Stealth Rock to deal direct damage against the player's Psyduck. This is noteworthy, as Stealth Rock previously did not deal direct damage against the opposing Pokemon and only set up a hazard that would deal damage upon an opposing Pokemon's entry into battle.

Cherubi Appears in a Photograph

Pokemon Legends Arceus Cherubi Photo

Though it has not yet been revealed in battle or roaming around the region, Cherubi could be seen in a photograph through one of the windows of the Photography Studio. This means that Cherubi and maybe its evolution Cherrim are likely to appear in the game.
