You cannot battle against other players in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Read on to learn about online battles, ranked battle, and if there are co-op functionalities in Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

You will not be able to battle other players, either locally or online, in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Most of the trainer battles you will encounter in the game will be against story characters, but the option to battle another player is not available.
Pokemon: Legends Arceus is described to be focused more on solo discovery and catching Pokemon of the early Hisui region, and the different strategies that go with this.
Battle System: Is Battle Turn-Based?
While battles aganist online players is not possible, Pokemon Legends: Arceus features battles against NPCs called Wardens.
Wardens serves as the Pokemon trainers in the Hisui region. These characters have forged special bonds with their Pokemon in the time when people living alongside Pokemon were rare.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus has multiplayer features as you can trade with other players locally or online, which explains Nintendo listing the game as playable by up to 2 players.
However, co-op is not available in the game, and there are no mini-games or side activities that lets you play with a friend.

While it would be interesting to see how the new Pokemon and regional variants fit into the competitive meta, Pokemon Legends Arceus will not house the competitive scene for Pokemon, which currently is still taking place in Pokemon Sword & Shield, as even Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl was announced to not support ranked battle.
Pokemon Legends Arceus is an action RPG more akin to Breath of the Wild and Monster Hunter than to previous Pokemon games, which takes a break from the series core features. We will, however, most likely see the competitive scene move on from Sword and Shield after Legends: Arceus in Generation 9, in a game closer to the mainline Pokemon series formula.
