You need to sneak up to a wild Pokemon and make sure they don't notice you to fully utilize the Heavy Ball. Since it has very short range, you will want to take advantage of tall grass and crouching with B (or other items) to get as close to the Pokemon as possible without alerting it, then throwing from behind!
To initiate a battle with a wild Pokemon, throw a Poke Ball containing your partner Pokemon towards it. Aim at an unsuspecting Pokemon's backside to potentially gain the advantage and catch them off guard!
Like in past Pokemon games, Pokemon will become easier to catch after being weakened. Lower their HP and inflict Status conditions like Drowsiness or Paralysis, then switch to your items with X, and press ZR to throw the Heavy Ball to try and catch it!
