Catching Without Battling: Catch and Evolve an Alpha Magikarp Catching Through Battling: Lower Alpha Gyarados' HP in battle |
It is difficult to capture an Alpha Gyarados since it is in water. First, you'll be easily detected by the Alpha Pokemon while you are riding Basculegion. Second, aiming with a Poke Ball while in the water is a bit challenging.
We recommend catching an Alpha Magikarp and evolving it to an Alpha Gyarados instead. Alpha Magikarp is much easier to catch and Gyarados' research tasks doesn't require you to catch its Alpha variant.
Catching an Alpha Gyarados in the water will most likely require you to battle it. Fortunately, Gyarados is 4x weak to Electricity. Exploit this weakness to lower Alpha Gyarados' health and throw a Poke Ball at it when you get it in the red.

One way of increasing an Alpha Pokemon's catch rate is by raising your Star Rank by completing Research Tasks.
If you find yourself having a hard time catching the Alpha Pokemon, raise the odds of capturing it by coming back with a higher Survey Corps rank.
