Before heading to Firespit Island to capture Heatran, we recommend preparing plenty of Balls of Mud first. If you don't have a lot, don't worry because there are some that are scattered in the arena where you'll face Heatran.
Heatran puts up a barrier that you need to take down every now and then. You can get rid of the barrier by throwing Balls of Mud at Heatran. Doing so will eventually stun the Pokemon and you'll have a brief window of opportunity to catch Heatran with a Gigaton Ball and a Back Strike. Repeat the process as necessary until you catch the Legendary Pokemon.
While engaging the Legendary Pokemon in a battle to lower its health seems like a good idea, it is not recommended because these Legendary Pokemon are strong and the battles can become very tough.
Save yourself the trouble of having to build a team just to catch the legendary Pokemon. It is much easier to catch it straight with Gigaton Balls or Ultra Balls once you have stunned them.
