You can set sail to Iron Island by talking to the sailor at the south of the city. You can do this immediately upon first arriving at Canalave City. It's not required to beat the Gym first.
It's a recommended location to train Pokemon strong against Ground-type and Steel-type Pokemon, which Gym Leader Byron's team is mostly comprised of.

Cnalave City's gym leader, Byron, is a steel-type user. We recommend using water and fighting types against his Pokemon. Bronzor is a psychic type but it doesn't have any damaging psychic moves so it's nothing to worry about.
Defeating Gym Leader Byron will reward you with the items below and unlock Strength (HM04). Once Strength (HM04) is unlocked, you can now use it outside of the battle.

Canalave City is home to the Move Deleter. You can talk to the old man inside the house between the Poke Mart and Poke Center to delete some of you Pokemon's moves.
You can go to Iron Island upon arriving at Canalave City. Simply talk to the sailor at the dock to go there.
Although going there isn't necessary to progress the story, it is still a good idea to go there to get a Riolu egg and a few important items like a Shiny Stone.
After becoming the champion, you can go back to Canalave City to go to Fullmoon Island. Talk to the sailor at the dock and he will tell you about his son who has been having nightmares. He will then ask you to go to Fullmoon Island to get the Lunar Feather.
After getting the Lunar Feather, go back to Canalave City and give the item to the sailor's kid to rid him of his nightmares. You can find him inside the house nearest to the dock.
