Metagross' excellent Steel/Psychic typing affords it a variety of resistances. With it's great Defense stat, it can comfortably switch into a resisted attack and either hit back with a powerful STAB move or set up Stealth Rock.

Metagross boasts a great Ability in Clear Body, which makes it immune to the ever-present Intimidate from Gyarados and Salamence. Choice Band further boosts Metagross' already stellar Attack stat. It compensates for its lack of coverage with raw power. Locking itself into Bullet Punch is often a great play because Bullet Punch's priority will always let Metagross attack first.
Meteor Mash is Metagross' strongest STAB move. Having it on the same set as Bullet Punch is not a bad idea, because Metagross already lacks coverage so we may as well have consistency in its STAB move choices.
The absence of Elemental Punches for Metagross in BDSP hampers its ability to be a more effective sweeper. Metagross' teammates must be able to efficiently handle bulky Water-types and Fire-types that can snuff out Metagross' momentum.
Positioning Metagross for a sweep is a solid gameplan, and we can achieve this by eliminating threats and walls using its teammates.
Earthquake | Earthquake is a great move choice as it can hit multiple types for super-effective or neutral damage. This also lets Metagross hit Magnezone and Heatran for super-effective damage. |
---|---|
Explosion | Explosion can deal decent damage against opposing Pokemon, which is good for when you no longer need Metagross in battle. Metagross can potentially trade itself 1-for-1 if Explosion is unresisted by the opponent. |
Hammer Arm | Hammer Arm gives Metagross Fighting coverage. |
Aerial Ace | Aerial Ace gives Metagross Flying coverage. This move also does not miss. |

✔︎ Very high Attack and Defense stats. ✔︎ Good choice for defensive switches. |
✖︎ Mediocre Speed stat. ✖︎ Poor move coverage. ✖︎ Easily walled. |
Metagross' Steel/Psychic typing is a great type combination offensively and defensively, as it allows Metagross to have plenty of resistances to different types. Metagross also has a great stat distribution, with decent HP and Special Defense, and incredible Attack and Defense. Its Speed stat is by far its worst stat, but with positioning and speed control, that's a weakness that is easily played around.
Metagross has a great ability in Clear Body. Being immune to stat drops is valuable, especially against opponents who would try to cycle Intimidates. It is still susceptible to status conditions though, as a burn will make it ineffectual as an attacker.
While it lacks coverage, Metagross makes up for it with consistency. It boasts a powerful STAB Meteor Mash as well as Zen Headbutt, both of which can deal good damage to most foes.
Metagross' lack of coverage moves makes it easy to wall. It struggles to do meaningful damage against bulky Water-types, and will not trade damage favorably especially if they run Scald.
Fire-types can shrug off damage from Metagross' Steel-type moves, making it so Metagross has no business staying in the active spot against them.

Breloom has a positive matchup against Water-types that can wall Metagross. A super-effective Bullet Seed can knock out most bulky Water-types, and can deal huge chunks of damage on neutral hit to Pokemon that don't resist it.

Wash Rotom can comfortably switch into Fire-type moves that threaten Metagross, and threaten KO's on Fire-types with Hydro Pump.
It can also check bulky Water-types that Metagross may have trouble with.
