Things to Do Before Getting the 1st Badge

Choosing a Starter Pokemon

Choose your Starter Pokemon carefully; the Pokemon that you will choose will be your primary Pokemon for the rest of the game and cannot be change. The starter with a type advantage to yours will be selected by your rival.

Best Starter Pokemon

Catch a Machop on Route 207

Pokemon BDSP MachopMachop

Go north of Oreburgh City to reach Route 207. In this wild area, you can encounter Machop. Since the 1st Gym Leader's Pokemon are Rock-types, having Machop in your team will be helpful. Catch Machop before challenging Gym Leader Roark.

Trade Machop for an Abra

Pokemon BDSP AbraAbra

Abra is challenging to catch as it uses Teleport. If you have an extra Machop and wish to have an Abra, you can trade it. Visit Oreburgh City and enter the second house from the Oreburgh Gate's exit. Then, talk to the girl to exchange your Machop.

Twinleaf Town

1 Talk to your mom and visit the top left building in Twinleaf Town. Then, go inside that house and meet your rival upstairs.
2 Travel to Route 201.
3 Travel northwest, and enter the path to Lake Verity.
4 Pokemon BDSP - Choose Starter Pokemon Go through the grass and check the briefcase. Choose your Starter Pokemon.
5 momReturn to Twinleaf Town and talk to your mom to receive the Running Shoes.

BDSP - Meet Dawn at Sandgem Town.png

6 Travel northeast to reach Sandgem Town and talk to Dawn/Lucas.

Sandgem Town

Receive Pokedex from Prof. Rowan.png

7 Dawn/Lucas will escort you to the research lab.
You'll receive Pokedex from Professor Rowan.
7 After exiting the lab, Dawn/Lucas will give you a tour of the different Pokemon facilities in Sandgem Town.
8 Travel back to Twinleaf Town to get a Guidebook from your mom and a Parcel for your rival.

9 Go near the grass area.
Prof Rowan's assistant will teach you how to catch Pokemon and give Poke Balls (x20).
10 Defeat the trainers along the way to pass through. Then, enter Jubilife City.

11 Visit the Trainers' School and deliver the Parcel to your rival to receive the Town Map.
You can find your rival near the blackboard.
12 Leave the Trainer's School building and travel north.
13 Poketech Jubilee City Pokemon BDSPFind all the clowns and answer their questions correctly. Then, claim the Poketch from the inventor after collecting all the coupons.
14 Travel to Route 203.

Battle the Trainers at the Trainers' School to Get 3 Work Up TMs (TM10)

BDSP - TM from Trainers

TMs for Work Up can be acquired by defeating the School Kids at the Trainer's School. You need to win both battles to receive the TM.

Get a Quick Claw at the Jubilife Condominiums

The Quick Claw is a handy battle item that has a 20% chance to make the holder move first during battle and is best given to slower Pokemon so that they have a chance to attack before the opposing Pokemon can make a move.

Talk to the girl near Pikachu and Pachirisu in the ground floor level of the building to receive Quick Claw. Jubilife Condominiums building is located near the entrance to Route 203.

Get an Old Rod

You can get an Old Rod from the fisherman inside the gate to Route 218. Route 218 is in the west of Jubilife City.

15 Go towards your rival, and it will trigger a battle. After defeating your rival, travel east.

Oreburgh Gate

Oreburgh Gate Rock Smash

16 You'll receive three Rock Smash TMs and the Hidden Moves app on your Pokétch with Rock Smash from a man on the entrance. Travel east to reach Oreburgh City.
Note: The Hidden Moves app on your Pokétch replaces HMs from the previous games. You can only use Rock Smash with the Hidden Moves app after defeating the first gym.

Oreburgh City

Roark inside Oreburgh Mine

17 Talk to to your rival. Then, travel to Oreburgh Mine and speak with Oreburgh City Gym Leader.
18 Return to Oreburgh City and challenge Gym Leader Roark. Defeat the two trainers inside the Gym to reach his location or use the stairs if you want to skip trainer battles.

Once the Gym Leader is defeated, you can no longer challenge the trainers you skipped.
