Escape from battle by pressing the Run option in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP). Read on for a guide on what items and abilities help you run away, as well as what moves prevent escaping!

How to Escape From Battle

Select Run in Battle Options

Pokemon BDSP Escape Run Away

During battle, simply select the Run option to run away. It's the blue button at the bottom right of the screen, underneath Battle, Pokemon, and Bag. You can only run away from wild encounters with Pokemon. You can't run away from trainer battles.

Speed Affects Escape Success

Pokemon BDSP Can

It becomes harder to run away from wild Pokemon that have a higher Speed stat than the Pokemon you have engaged in battle. In that case, you can switch to a Pokemon with a higher Speed or use an item that will allow you to trigger an escape.

Items that Help Escape

You can use a Poke Doll or a Smoke Ball to guarantee your escape from battle. Poke Dolls can be bought for 1000 at the Veilstone Department Store, while the Smoke Ball can be found on Route 210 and rarely as a held item on Koffing and Weezing.

Run Away Ability

The Run Away ability guarantees a succesful escape from battle, so you can run away when you have a Pokemon with this ability engaged in battle. Below are the Pokemon with Run Away:

Run Away Effect and Pokemon With this Ability

Moves that Prevent Escape

When a Pokemon is Bound, you are unable to flee and it is unable to be switched out for up to 5 turns. Below is a list of moves that bind:

Move Type Description
Bind Normal Type Move Icon A long body or tentacles are used to bind and squeeze the foe for two to five turns.
Fire Spin Fire Type Move Icon The target becomes trapped within a fierce vortex of fire that rages for four to five turns.
Magma Storm Fire Type Move Icon The foe becomes trapped within a maelstrom of fire that rages for two to five turns.
Sand Tomb Ground Type Move Icon The user traps the foe inside a harshly raging sandstorm for two to five turns.
Whirlpool Water Type Move Icon The user traps the foe inside a fast, vicious whirlpool that lasts for two to five turns.
Wrap Normal Type Move Icon A long body or vines are used to wrap and squeeze the foe for two to five turns.
