If you have Pokemon Shining Pearl, Palkia can be encountered at the Spear Pillar after defeating Team Galactic at the summit and saving it from the Red Chain and Cyrus' control.
Steps to encounter Palkia | |
---|---|
1 | Defeat Team Galactic members on your way to Spear Pillar. |
2 | Battle Commander Mars and Jupiter with your rival and defeat them. |
3 | Palkia will be set free from the Red Chain's control. Battle and defeat Cyrus. You rival will heal your Pokemon before battling him. |
4 | After defeating Cyrus, Palkia will go out of control. Interact with it to start the battle. Brings its HP down to red and use Ultra Balls to catch it, or use a Master Ball if you want. |
If you are playing Pokemon Brilliant Diamond, you will need to trade with someone as Palkia is unobtainable in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond.

It would be best to bring a defensive Pokemon who can take Palkia's hits as you attempt to catch it. Partner this with enough healing items and you shouldn't run into any major issues.

Hypnosis | Yawn |
When facing Palkia, we recommend using Bronzong with Hypnosis or Quagsire with Yawn. This equips you with a bulky Pokemon with access to a status-inflicting move to improve catch rates.
Bronzong is a good choice since you can catch one as you progress through Mt. Coronet. Its Steel-typing makes it resist any move Palkia can throw at it. It can also learn support moves like Hypnosis that make catching Dialga easier.
In case a Quick Ball on turn 1 did not succeed, the Net Ball is a reliable go-to ball to use instead.
If about a dozen turns have passed, you may also rely on the Timer Ball for higher success rates of capture.
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond players can still add Palkia to their Pokedex by speaking to Cynthia's Grandmother in Celestic Town. She will show you an image of Palkia after you beat Cyrus at Spear Pillar. This will be enough to add it to your Pokedex.
How to Unlock the National Dex
Palkia is also obtainable in Pokemon Legends: Arceus during the course of its story.
If you are missing a legendary Pokemon, especially those that are time-limited, we suggest transferring the Pokemon from Legends: Arceus via Pokemon HOME!
Pokemon HOME Guide (Update 2.0)
Palkia is not shiny locked in Shining Pearl, so make sure to save before engaging it in battle to soft reset the encounter!
You can try catching a shiny Palkia at Spear Pillar by soft resetting. Soft resetting for a shiny may take several resets, so make sure you're ready with the right Pokemon and a healthy stock of Poke Balls for the battle.
Best Natures | ||
---|---|---|
Timid (+Spd, -Atk) |
Modest (+Sp.Atk, -Atk) |
Palkia's above-average Speed and high Special Attack make it a great Special Attacker.
This makes both Timid and Modest attractive options for natures, with the choice between the two ultimately boiling down whether you want Palkia to move faster or hit harder with its STAB moves.
