How to Have Pokemon Follow You and Walk With Pokemon

How to Get Walking Pokemon

Unlocked After First Visit to Amity Square

Unlocking Walking Pokemon

The Walking Pokemon feature will be unlocked after visiting the Amity Square in Hearthome City for the first time.

After exiting the park for the first time, the attendant will then mention that your Pokemon wants to walk with you even if you are outside Amity Square.

You are able to travel to Hearthome City after defeating the 2nd Gym Leader, Gardenia, rescuing the Bicycle Shop owner from Team Galactic, and obtaining the Bicycle.

How to Choose Walking Pokemon

Steps to Choose Walking Pokemon
1 Pokemon Menu
Press X and select Pokemon.
2 Walk Together Option
Choose the Pokemon you want to walk with and select Walk together.
3 Walking Pokemon Has Star Banner
The Pokemon you chose to walk with will have a star banner beside their name!

How to Interact with Walking Pokemon

Interacting with Walking Pokemon

Turn around to face your Walking Pokemon and press the A Button to interact with them to find out the Pokemon's current mood. These reactions vary depending on the environment, health status, time, and more.

Obtain Picked Up Items

Sometimes, Walking Pokemon may give you items that they picked up from the ground when you interact with them. You may get Berries as you travel with them, so make it a habit to talk to them!

Special Reaction

There will be moments where the Pokemon you are walking with will have unique interactions with you, such as jumping with joy!

Items Walking Pokemon Get

Berries

You will occasionally get a Berry if you interact with your walking Pokemon. The Berry your walking Pokemon gets will depend on their nature. Walking Pokemon will only pick up berries on rare instances, so it is not a reliable way of obtaining these berries.

Do note that your walking Pokemon does not need to have the ability Pickup to get Berries.

How to Turn Off Walking Pokemon

Return to Ball

If the Pokemon you are walking with is hampering your movement or when you want to travel alone, you can simply remove them in the overworld by choosing the Return to Ball option in the Pokemon menu.

Pokemon That Follow You Around

Walking Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pearl.png

In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, one of the Pokemon in your party will be able to walk alongside you as you traverse the entire overworld. This feature was only available in HeartGold and Soul Silver, the Let's Go! games, and with Pikachu only in Pokemon Yellow.

In the original Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, select Pokemon may only stroll with you when you are inside Amity Square.

Differences from Original Versions

Shiny Pokemon will Appear Shiny

Walking Shiny Pokemon
If you're lucky enough to have a Shiny Pokemon, you might as well show it off as it follows you around in the overworld! Shiny Pokemon will have their colors reflected in their overworld models as they follow you around.

Walk with Any Pokemon in Your Party

Walk Together Option

You can select any Pokemon in your party as your strolling partner. Access this option in the Pokemon menu and select the Pokemon you want to walk with.

Note that walking Pokemon will not be present when you are inside buildings.

Walking Pokemon Will Follow You While Biking

Walking Pokemon and Biking

Walking Pokemon will follow you even when you are riding your Bicycle. Whenever you get too far, they will be transported back to you, so don't worry if your Pokemon are lagging behind!

With Full Party in Amity Square

Amity Square now allows you to stroll around with up to 6 eligible Pokemon in your party. In the previous games, you could only stroll around with 1 Pokemon. Your Pokemon don't just stroll directly behind you and are free to roam around. You can call them to you by whistling.

Note that only certain Pokemon are eligible to be brought out in Amity Square.
