How to Find Giratina's Location | |
---|---|
1 | Head to Turnback Cave after getting the National Dex |
2 | Navigate Turnback Cave using Defog |
3 | Find Giratina in the Deepest Room of Turnback Cave |
After obtaining the National Dex, the Spring Path will appear in the eastern, forest side of Route 214.
How to Unlock the National Dex
Follow the path to reach Sendoff Spring and use Rock Climb to reach the entrance of Turnback Cave.
Turnback Cave has low visibility due to fog. Use Defog on the Poketch to clear the air and navigate the cave.
Giratina is located in the room that comes after the 3rd pillar, however the layout of Turnback Cave is randomly generated, so it will take some RNG luck.
Keep going through rooms until you pass the room with the 3rd pillar. You need to accomplish this in under 30 rooms, or else you'll be sent back to the entrance. Entering at the room you have exited from will also lead you back to the entrance.

Shadow Force Pain Split Aura Sphere Dragon Claw |
Giratina's Ghost-typing means it is immune to False Swipe which means you have to be careful with lowering its HP! In addition it can get annoying to whittle down as it may just heal back up with Pain Split. Bringing a Pokemon with Taunt can be useful in stopping it from regenerating health.

Yawn |
Taunt Thunder Wave |
When facing Giratina, we recommend using either Quagsire with Yawn, or Absol with Thunder Wave and Taunt.
Absol can be the best choice here thanks to its natural resistance to Giratina's Shadow Force. Its access to Taunt can also prevent Giratina from recovering HP with Pain Split.
Alternatively, Quagsire is another bulky water type with access to Yawn and can be found pretty easily in the Grand Underground.
In case a Quick Ball on turn 1 did not succeed, the Dusk Ball is a reliable go-to ball to use instead.
If about a dozen turns have passed, you may also rely on the Timer Ball for higher success rates of capture.
Altered Forme | Origin Forme |
---|---|
When Giratina isn't holding an item or is holding any item other than Griseous Orb, it will always appear as its Altered Forme.
You can change Giratina's Forme by giving it the Griseous Orb held item. This changes it to its Origin Forme. Players can get the Griseous Orb by defeating the shadowy Level 100 Giratina in the Distortion Room of Ramanas Park. You'll have to take it down, this form of Giratina cannot be captured.
Best Natures | ||
---|---|---|
Bold (+Def, -Atk) |
Calm (+Sp.Def, -Atk) |
Giratina's Altered Forme boasts impressive bulk thanks to its great HP and balanced defenses, making both Bold and Calm attractive Natures.
Bold is the preferred choice since Giratina's Ghost-typing makes it a great check against physical attackers, particularly Fighting-type Pokemon. Calm has a niche though if you're looking to use Giratina to defend against Fire, Water, Grass, and Electric-type Pokemon.

---|---|---|
Modest (+Sp.Atk, -Atk) |
Quiet (+Sp.Atk, -Spd) |
Giratina's Origin Forme keeps its great HP and retains some of its bulk, but gets a boost to both of its offensive stats.
Despite this, a special attack-boosting nature like Modest is the better choice since Giratina has a poor physical movepool and its signature move requires two turns - allowing an opponent to switch out to a Ghost-resistant or immune Pokemon.
Quiet is another option if you're looking for a mixed attacking Giratina that's perfect for Trick Room teams!
Giratina is also obtainable in Pokemon Legends: Arceus during the course of its story.
If you are missing a legendary Pokemon, especially those that are time-limited, we suggest transferring the Pokemon from Legends: Arceus via Pokemon HOME!

I got really lucky with Giratina. I used a level 33 Golduck with a Quick Claw and used Soak to make it a water type, then when it got knocked out, I used Luxray’s Thunder Wave and then switched to Absol and used False Swipe. It took 3 Dusk Balls to catch!
