Hurricane Mind Reader Blizzard Sheer Cold |
We recommend bringing a Pokemon that is higher than Level 70 when trying to catch Articuno. While the combination of Mind Reader and Sheer Cold might scare you into thinking it can one-hit KO members of your team, Sheer Cold will not work if your Pokemon is a higher level than Articuno.
If you don't have a Pokemon higher than Level 70, you may also just take your chances and hope that Sheer Cold will miss. Switching Pokemon also cancels the effect of Mind Reader, so you can switch to a different party member after Articuno uses the move.

False Swipe Yawn |
False Swipe Thunder Wave |
When facing Articuno, we recommend using either Blastoise with Yawn and False Swipe, or Absol with Thunder Wave and False Swipe. These Pokemon give you a reliable way to whittle down the opponent's HP as low as possible, and access to a status-inflicting move to improve catch rates.
Blastoise can be the best choice here thanks to its bulk and natural resistance to Articuno's Blizzard. We don't recommend Breloom due to its weakness to Hurricane and Blizzard.
Alternatively, Quagsire is another bulky water type with access to Yawn and can be found pretty easily in the Grand Underground. It doesn't have access to False Swipe, but may be easier to raise to above level 70.
In case a Quick Ball on turn 1 did not succeed, the Ultra Ball is a reliable go-to ball to use instead. If you are facing Articuno at night, Dusk Balls become the better option.
If about a dozen turns have passed, you may also rely on the Timer Ball for higher success rates of capture.

Careful Special Defense ↑ Attack ↓ |
Timid Speed↑ Attack ↓ |
For players who intend to use Articuno to its full potential, we recommend looking for one with a Careful or Timid Nature. As a Pokemon who relies on its Special Stats, it would appreciate the increase to either its Special Attack or Special Defense and not mind the drop in its Attack stat.
