If you have Pokemon Brilliant Diamond, Dialga can be encountered at the Spear Pillar after defeating Team Galactic at the summit and saving it from the Red Chain and Cyrus' control.
Steps to encounter Dialga | |
---|---|
1 | Defeat Team Galactic members on your way to Spear Pillar. |
2 | Battle Commander Mars and Jupiter with your rival and defeat them. |
3 | Dialga will be set free from the Red Chain's control. Battle and defeat Cyrus. You rival will heal your Pokemon before battling him. |
4 | After defeating Cyrus, Dialga will go out of control. Interact with it to start the battle. Brings its HP down to red and use Ultra Balls to catch it, or use a Master Ball if you want. |
If you are playing Pokemon Shining Pearl, you will need to trade with someone as Dialga is unobtainable in Pokemon Shining Pearl.

It would be best to bring a defensive Pokemon who can take Dialga's hits as you attempt to catch it. Partner this with enough healing items and you shouldn't run into any major issues.

Hypnosis | Yawn |
When facing Dialga, we recommend using Bronzong with Hypnosis or Quagsire with Yawn. This equips you with a bulky Pokemon with access to a status-inflicting move to improve catch rates.
Bronzong is a good choice since you can catch one as you progress through Mt. Coronet. Its Steel-typing makes it resist any move Dialga can throw at it. It can also learn support moves like Hypnosis that make catching Dialga easier.
In case a Quick Ball on turn 1 did not succeed, the Ultra Ball is a reliable go-to ball to use instead. If you are facing Dialga at night, Dusk Balls become the better option.
If about a dozen turns have passed, you may also rely on the Timer Ball for higher success rates of capture.
Pokemon Shining Pearl players can still add Dialga to their Pokedex by speaking to Cynthia's Grandmother in Celestic Town. She will show you an image of Dialga after you beat Cyrus at Spear Pillar. This will be enough to add it to your Pokedex.
How to Unlock the National Dex
Dialga is also obtainable in Pokemon Legends: Arceus during the course of its story.
If you are missing a legendary Pokemon, especially those that are time-limited, we suggest transferring the Pokemon from Legends: Arceus via Pokemon HOME!
Pokemon HOME Guide (Update 2.0)
Dialga is not shiny locked in Brilliant Diamond, so make sure to save before engaging it in battle to soft reset the encounter!
You can try catching a shiny Dialga at Spear Pillar by soft resetting. Soft resetting for a shiny may take several resets, so make sure you're ready with the right Pokemon and a healthy stock of Poke Balls for the battle.
Best Natures | ||
---|---|---|
Modest (+Sp.Atk, -Atk) |
Calm (+Sp.Def, -Atk) |
Dialga's natural bulk and great dual-typing make it a great choice for bulky special attacker. This makes Modest a great nature as you can invest HP and Defensive EVs while also boosting Dialga's high Special Attack.
Alternatively, Calm is another good nature if you want to train Dialga into a more defensive-oriented support Pokemon.
