Mamoswine finds a place as a lead, having favorable matchups versus other leads like Metagross or Heatran, which Mamoswine can OHKO even though Heatran has Shuca Berry. It can threaten Aerodactyl leads with a powerful Ice Shard.
Oblivious is used here to protect Mamoswine from Intimidate Attack drops. This Mamoswine minds those Attack drops because they may hinder Mamoswine's capablities as an attacker as it is not running an Adamant Nature, nor is it running an Attack boosting Held Item.
Pokemon | Ability | Item | Moves | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mamoswine | Thick Fat | Life Orb | ・Ice Shard ・Earthquake ・Icicle Spear ・Stone Edge |
||
Nature / EVs | Adamant / 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe | ||||
Final Stats | 185 HP / 200 Atk / 100 Def / 81 SpD / 132 Spe |
Mamoswine's sky high Attack stat is difficult to ignore, as it can consistently deal significant damage to Pokemon who do not outright resist it. This set can threaten any Dragon-type Pokemon with its Ice Shard. It can outright knock out Garchomp, Salamence, and deal more than half to Dragonite with Multiscale.
Stone Edge could take care of opposing Zapdos or Gyarados.
The choice for Thick Fat in this set is for a little bit of extra survivability. Mamoswine has very poor defenses and weaknesses to a lot of common types. Being neutral to Fire is valuable as it allows Mamoswine to withstand Fire-type moves, notably being able to survive something like Fire Blast from Heatran.
Mamoswine is best suited for offense-oriented teams because it does not contribute much to a team's overall defense. Its pitiful defenses can make it a liability for your team, so it must always be protected. Rarely should you use it for defensive switches. It is best to use Mamoswine either as a lead, or after a teammate has been knocked out. Mamoswine is excellent for checking Dragon-types and other Pokemon that are weak to its main STAB moves.
Mamoswine appreciates teammates that can threaten Steel-types who would try to switch into its Ice-type moves. A Mamoswine player may try to predict a switch and click Earthquake instead.
It comfortably finds a place in Drag-Mag team compositions. These are teams that consist of Magnezone (which can eliminate Steel-types and Fairy-types) and Dragon-types, which can run rampant when their switch-ins are eliminated. Mamoswine also enjoys the removal of Steel-types as it can freely fire off powerful Ice Shards without fear.
While not the speediest or most defensive Pokemon, Mamoswine's value is in its ability to keep powerful Pokemon in check. Pokemon such as Heatran, Gliscor, Garchomp, Salemence, and Dragonite don't like facing down a Mamoswine. With access to Stealth Rock, the combination of offense and utility make Mamoswine a very strong inclusion in most teams.
Icicle Crash | A different Ice-type move option. It is less accurate than Icicle Spear, but it is more powerful. |

Rock Slide | A different Rock-type move option. It is less powerful than Stone Edge, but it is more accurate. |
Freeze-Dry | A move that can surprise bulky Water-type Pokemon who would attempt to wall Mamoswine. |

✔︎ Has a very high Attack Stat. ✔︎ Can effectively pressure Ice-weak Pokemon. ✔︎ Very good for revenge KOs. |
✖︎ Has mediocre Speed and defenses, as well as weaknesses to many different types. ✖︎ Loses to common Priority moves. ✖︎ Not a good option for defensive switches. |
Mamoswine's monstrous Attack stat makes it the strongest user of Ice Shard. It can threaten knock outs on any Pokemon that it can hit for super-effective. As long as Dragon-types are strong in a format, Mamoswine will always have a place in it.
It is not limited to just its powerful Ice Shard though, as its STAB Earthquake is also a force to be reckoned with. It is able to knock out Heatran even though it has Shuca Berry. It is also able to deal massive damage even at -1 Attack on common Intimidate users such as Gyarados and Arcanine, both of which Mamoswine can still knock out through Intimidate with Stone Edge and Earthquake respectively.
Mamoswine's poor Speed means it will usually lose in a battle of priority moves. It is extremely susceptible to common Priority moves such as Aqua Jet, Bullet Punch, and Mach Punch. Mamoswine can also be walled by bulky Water-types.

Nature / EVs | Modest 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe | ||||
Final Stats | 145 HP / 136 Def / 200 SpA / 110 SpD / 112 Spe |
Magnezone can trap Steel-types who can wall Mamoswine with its Magnet Pull Ability. With no reliable way to damage Steel-types in this game, Mamoswine enjoys Magnezone's assistance in trapping them and knocking them out.
Magnezone also has good matchups against Pokemon that give Mamoswine a hard time. It can threaten Thunderbolt KO's on Skarmory and Azumarill, as well as being able to wall and trap Scizor and hit it with Specs-boosted Thunderbolts.
Despite having a shallow move pool, Magnezone excels at its job: Trapping and KO-ing Steel-types.
Mamoswine and Magnezone also have great synergy with each other, as they can cover for the other's weaknesses. Magnezone does not match up favorably against Special walls and Heatran, and Mamoswine can take them out. However both are weak to strong Fighting-types.

Nature / EVs | Timid 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe | ||||
Final Stats | 154 HP / 101 Def / 182 SpA / 130 SpD / 178 Spe |
Latios measures up favorably against Fighting types, resisting Fighting-type moves and being able to hit back with a STAB Psychic. It can deal with bulky Water-types with Energy Ball. Latios also excels at its most basic job, which is nuking things with Draco Meteor.
Mamoswine appreciates Latios as a teammate, as it can either KO Fighting-types or at least force them to switch out.
Mamoswine can sweep through teams that have taken damage from battling against Latios and Magnezone.
