How to Change Pokemon Nicknames

Change a Pokemon's nickname by talking to the Name Rater in Eterna City. Read on to learn how to change Pokemon's nickname, the Name Rater location, and when you can't change your Pokemon's nickname in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP).

How to Change Pokemon Nicknames

Name Rater in Eterna Condominiums

Name Rater Building

Change a Pokemon's nickname by talking to the Name Rater on the 1st floor of Eterna Condominiums in Eterna City. Show him a single Pokemon and he will "rate" its nickname then offer you a chance to give the Pokemon a new nickname.

Pokemon eligible for nickname changes are rated decent

Nicknaming Caught Pokemon

Any Pokemon you've caught will have their name rated as decent. Pokemon that previously did not have nicknames will also have the same rating.

You will then be asked if you want to change their nickname or not!

No limit in giving new nicknames to caught Pokemon

There's no limit to how many times you can change the nickname of Pokemon you've caught. You can even change the nickname of a single Pokemon multiple times. Conversely, to cancel a change of nickname, simply select Okay with the nickname blank.

Can't Change Nickname of Traded Pokemon

Nicknaming Traded Pokemon

Pokemon received from trades cannot have their nickname changed whether they already have an existing nickname or not. The Name Rater will describe the Pokemon already has an impeccable name and you will not get an option to type in a new nickname.

With non-NPC trades, you could always ask the person you're trading with if they could give the Pokemon your preferred nickname first, before trading.
