Nicknames of Traded Pokemon Can't Be Changed

Traded Pokemon Can

Any Pokemon that you have received from trade, whether from in-game trades from NPCs or from other players, cannot have their nickname changed whether they already have a nickname or not.

The Name Rater in Eterna City will rate their nicknames as impeccable and will not give you an option to change their names.

Pokemon you've caught, however, can have their nicknames changed as many times as you like.
How to Change Nicknames

Pokemon from In-Game Trades Retain their Nicknames

Traded Pokemon without Nicknames Can't Be Given One

BDSP - Giving Nicknames to Traded Pokemon.png

Unlike in Pokemon Sword and Shield, you still cannot give a traded Pokemon a new nickname even if it did not have a nickname prior to trading. The Pokemon will need to keep its original name.

The same rule also applies to Pokemon from different language versions of the game. A Scizor from a German-language version of the game will always have its German name, Scherox, even after it is traded to an English-language version.
