In the original games, you acquired HMs as move-teaching items at various points throughout the story. These Hidden Moves still exist in the remakes, but instead of teaching the moves to your Pokemon, you unlock the feature directly onto your Poketch. This way, you don't need to sacrifice a move slot of your party Pokemon or make use of an HM slave.
Each Hidden Move is found at the same location at the original game, but instead of receiving an HM item, the Hidden Move will be added to the Poketch's Hidden Moves app.
The function of HMs remains the same. You stand facing the obstacle (small tree, boulders, rocky wall), then pull out your Poketch's Hidden Moves app and select the applicable HM to use. You will most likely also be able to press A when facing certain obstacles for it to prompt use of the HM as well, just like in the originals.
Even after you obtain the Hidden Move in your Poketch, you won't be able to make use of it until you obtain a specific Gym Badge. It will appear greyed out on the Poketch screen until the required Gym Leader is defeated.
While they are not required to use like in the original games, each Hidden Move is also available as a TM which players can teach their Pokemon to use the move in battle. These TMs are obtained simultaneously with gaining access to the Hidden Move on the Poketch.
These TMs fill the spots from 93-100, which were not used in the original games.
Hidden Move | Corresponding TM |
---|---|
Rock Smash | TM93 |
Cut | TM94 |
Fly | TM95 |
Defog | TM96 |
Surf | TM97 |

Waterfall | TM100 |
