Hearthome City's gym leader, Fantina, is a ghost type user. It would be wise to have a Dark type physical attack to damage her Pokemon. Just be careful of the status conditions her Pokemon can inflict on your team.
Defeating Gym Leader Fantina will reward you with the items below and unlock Surf (HM03). Once Surf (HM03) is unlocked, you can now use it outside of the battle.

Amity Square is a park in Hearthome City where you can walk with cute Pokemon in your party. New to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, up to 6 Pokemon can roam around the park with you, and you can now cook Poffins inside the Park.
Useful held items can be found inside Amity Square.
Letting a Pokemon hold Amulet Coin and sending it out in a battle will double the money you will get from that winning that battle. This can be used for farming money.
Ghost-type Pokemon will see much use from holding Spooky Plate as it boosts Ghost-type attacks.
A Hiker near the gate leading to Route 209 will give you a Pokemon Egg that hatches into Happiny if you speak to him.
A Happiny Egg needs 10,031 steps in order for it to hatch. To speed up this process, include a Pokemon with Flame Body in your party, as it halves the steps required to hatch Pokemon Eggs.
Pokemon with Flame Body | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Magby | Magmar | Magmortar | |||
Ponyta | Rapidash | ||||
Note: Ponyta and Rapidash have Flame Body as their Hidden Abilities |
Happiny evolves into Chansey then into Blissey, a Pokemon with a stellar HP stat that can act as a wall capable of receiving powerful attacks.
You can get a poffin case from the president of the Pokemon Fan Club. Their building is located to the right of the Poke Mart.
A Beauty will check the Friendship of the lead Pokemon in your party. She will tell you how close the Pokemon is to you, although her descriptions might be vague.
It is still recommended to use Poketch's Friendship Checker app which you can get in Eterna City.
Hearthome City is home to Super Contest Shows. Here, you can compete with your Pokemon without engaging in a battle.
Super Contest Show Guide and New Features
If you have a poffin case, you can talk to the man near the counter to receive a mild poffin. If you don't have one yet, you can head to the Pokemon Fan Club and talk to the president to receive one.
You can make poffins by interacting with the lady in the Poffin House or Amity Square. Poffins are treats that are used to raise a Pokemon's condition!
Talk to the blonde woman inside the Pokemon Fan Club to check if you have high friendship with your Pokemon. If it does, the woman will give you a Best Friends Ribbon.
Enter the house right next to the Pokemon Center to meet Bebe, the Pokemon Storage developer in Sinnoh.
Mr. Goods can be found in front of Bebe's house and behind the Poffin House. He will reward you with Secret Base Decorations if you meet certain requirements like winning all Master Class categories in Super Contests and doing activities in the Grand Underground.
Shell Bell restores its holder's HP by 1/8 of its max health every time it lands an attack on a target. This item is best used on defensive Pokemon like Snorlax as it lets them heal some HP while attacking, supporting their role as tanks in your team.
