Use STAB effectively by having Pokemon use a move of the same type as it. Read on for a guide on how to utilize STAB and how to get more damage with STAB in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP) for the Nintendo Switch.
List of Contents

It's recommended that all Pokemon should have at least 1 STAB move in their learnset, in order for you to utilize their typing.
Dual-type Pokemon get STAB on moves that match either of their types. For example, a dual Fire/Fighting-type like Infernape will get STAB from the Fire-type move Flare Blitz and the Fighting-type move Mach Punch.
Moves that deal fixed damage (regardless of Attack stat) don't get any STAB Boost. Below are the attack moves that deal fixed damage:
| Fixed Damage Move | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Counter |
|
A retaliation move that counters any physical attack, inflicting double the damage taken. |
| Endeavor |
|
An attack move that cuts down the foe’s HP to equal the user’s HP. |
| Metal Burst |
|
The user retaliates against the foe that last inflicted damage on it with much greater power. |
| Mirror Coat |
|
A retaliation move that counters any special attack, inflicting double the damage taken. |
| Night Shade |
|
The user makes the foe see a mirage. It inflicts damage matching the user’s level. |
| Super Fang |
|
The user chomps hard on the foe with its sharp front fangs. It cuts the target's HP to half. |
Pokemon with the Ability Adaptability will receive 2x STAB Boost instead of 1.5x. Adaptability is a possible Ability for both Eevee and Porygon-Z, who are both Normal-type Pokemon.

Adaptability Effect and Pokemon

STAB is an abbreviation that stands for Same-Type Attack Bonus. When a Pokemon uses a move with a type that matches its own, it will deal 1.5x the normal amount of damage with that move.
